Yes: AI can help a subject matter expert turn what they know into a clear first draft faster. But it does not supply the expertise that makes the writing trustworthy. The strongest results come when an expert sets the argument, provides context and examples, and checks every important claim before publication.

What the evidence says about AI and professional writing

A randomized experiment by Shakked Noy and Whitney Zhang, published in Science in 2023, tested occupation-specific writing tasks with 453 college-educated professionals. Participants using ChatGPT completed the tasks in 40% less time on average and received output-quality scores 18% higher than the control group. These are results from that experiment and its particular tasks—not a guarantee that every specialist will write faster or better in day-to-day work. Read the study summary from Stanford Graduate School of Education’s SCALE Initiative.

The experiment supports a practical use: get help moving from a blank page to a workable draft, then use expertise to make it accurate and useful. It did not test the entire process of turning deep professional knowledge into a publishable article, so it cannot establish that AI can independently capture what an expert knows.

Why results depend on the task

AI performance is uneven, even across work that may look similar to a person. In a 2025 field experiment involving 758 knowledge workers and 18 tasks, researchers found that AI users completed 12.2% more tasks and worked 25.1% faster on average for tasks within the tested system’s capability frontier. On a complex task outside that frontier, however, AI users were 19% less likely to produce a correct solution. The authors describe this uneven boundary as a “jagged technological frontier.” See the study in Organization Science.

For writing, the implication is to choose tasks deliberately. Drafting, restructuring, summarizing material you provide, and improving clarity may be useful places to try AI. Work that depends on specialized facts, consequential interpretation, or a precise reading of evidence needs closer expert control. Fluent prose is not proof that the underlying answer is correct.

What workplace studies do—and do not—show

Workplace studies suggest that AI can change the time workers spend on some communication tasks, but time saved on a task is not the same as a transformed job. Microsoft Research’s April 2025 study found that tool users spent three fewer hours per week on email, a 25% reduction. Its intent-to-treat estimate—the effect of being assigned access, rather than only the effect among users—was 1.4 hours. Workers also appeared to complete documents moderately faster; meeting time did not significantly change. Read Microsoft Research’s report.

A separate six-month field experiment across 66 firms and 7,137 workers, reported on the American Economic Association page as forthcoming when accessed in October 2026, found that the 80% of treated workers who used the tool spent two fewer hours on email each week during the experiment’s second half. Researchers detected no shift in the quantity or composition of tasks from providing AI access at the individual level. See the American Economic Review: Insights page.

Those findings concern different studies and measures. They do not show that every worker saves the same amount of time, that email savings become writing time, or that access alone changes what a role requires.

Where an expert adds value to an AI-assisted draft

Microsoft Research analyzed 200,000 anonymized and privacy-scrubbed Bing Copilot conversations in 2025. Users commonly sought help with information gathering and writing; common AI activities included providing information and assistance, writing, teaching, and advising. The analysis describes patterns of use, not proof that a particular profession or expert role will be replaced. Read the occupation-applicability analysis.

An expert can make the work stronger at the points where an AI-generated draft is least able to stand on its own:

  • Judge what matters: decide which distinctions, caveats, and implications belong in the explanation.

A practical workflow for using AI to write

  1. Define the assignment. Write down the reader, the question, the desired outcome, and any limits on scope or tone.
  2. Provide grounded inputs. Give the AI notes, approved source material, examples, and terminology. Separate established facts from your interpretations or open questions.
  3. Ask for a structure before polished prose. Request an outline or a list of key points, then correct omissions and ordering before generating a full draft.
  4. Draft in sections. Work on bounded pieces—such as an explanation, a process, or a set of examples—so you can assess each one against the source material.
  5. Review for truth before style. Verify every material factual claim and citation. Remove invented details, unsupported certainty, and anything that changes the meaning of your evidence.
  6. Edit for the reader. Replace generic passages with specific explanations, examples, and language that fit the audience. Make the final editorial decisions yourself.

How to decide whether AI belongs in the workflow

There is no evidence here that one named writing product is best for experts. Choose whether and how to use a tool based on the work and the consequences of an error:

  • Task fit: Is the need drafting, summarizing, editing, research, or something else? Treat each task separately rather than assuming success at one predicts success at another.
  • Verification burden: Can you check the output against trusted sources and your own expertise before anyone relies on it?
  • Review quality: Is a knowledgeable person responsible for correcting the content, not just polishing the prose?
  • Privacy: Are the notes or source materials appropriate to enter into the chosen tool under your organization’s rules?
  • Cost of an error: If an incorrect claim could cause harm or materially mislead readers, keep stronger human controls and avoid relying on an unchecked draft.

Use AI where it helps with the mechanics of communication; keep human judgment in charge of the substance. The studies show potential gains on specific tasks, not a universal shortcut around expertise.
