Secure an AI agent by giving it a distinct, owned identity; granting only the task-specific access it needs; protecting its credentials; and practicing how to revoke access across every connected system. Use the checklist below to establish controls before deployment and to verify that an agent can be contained when something goes wrong.

What to secure before an agent goes live

An agent’s effective access is more than its assigned role. It can include permissions inherited from its identity, tools it can invoke, data exposed through connected services, and authority delegated by a user. Review that full chain: an orchestrator’s decision is not enough if a downstream service does not enforce the authorization.

Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance for Microsoft Entra Agent ID recommends a dedicated identity, documented ownership and purpose, scoped authorization, attribution in logs, and tested revocation. AWS’s Agentic AI Lens guidance on agent identity and permission management warns about shared static credentials and permission creep. These are implementation recommendations, not a universal guarantee: enforcement and revocation must be validated in the identity provider, agent framework, and each downstream service you use.

Access control checklist

Control area Checklist Evidence to keep
Inventory and ownership Record every production agent, its unique identity, accountable owner or sponsor, approver, purpose, environment, approved data and tools, and lifecycle status. An agent register and a documented purpose, owner, environment, and approved access.
Identity and delegation Use a dedicated nonhuman identity instead of a shared human credential. Make any “on behalf of” user authority explicit. Principal identifiers and the delegation model in the architecture record.
Permission scope Limit access by task, resource, data, operation, and duration. Review permissions in aggregate across roles, tools, and downstream services. Effective-permission review and scoped role assignments.
Tools and actions Allowlist approved tools and actions. Require approval or time-limited elevation for consequential actions such as deletion, export, purchase, deployment, or permission changes. A tool-and-action matrix, approval policy, and just-in-time elevation record where applicable.
Credential lifecycle Keep credentials out of prompts and agent memory. Prefer managed or federated identity where supported; otherwise use scoped, short-lived credentials with an owner, expiry, rotation, and emergency invalidation process. Credential owner, issuance and expiry details, rotation process, and invalidation procedure.
Logging and detection Make each action attributable to the agent and, where relevant, the initiating or delegating user. Record effective scope, action, resource, and correlation context; review permission changes. Audit fields, downstream logs, and alert and review procedures.
Emergency revocation Exercise identity disablement, token invalidation, credential rotation, removal of stale grants, and downstream enforcement. Test date, measured revocation time, system-by-system results, and recovery steps.
Change review Reassess access when the workflow, tools, data, or deployment changes materially. Change record and refreshed authorization review.

How to scope permissions and tool access

Start from the task, not the agent’s possible future needs

For each workflow, identify the specific data and operations it requires. Grant only those permissions, at the narrowest resource boundary available, and avoid broad roles that let an agent act on unrelated resources. Review the combined effect of all role assignments and tool connections; individually modest grants can add up to a much wider capability.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Allowlist tools and gate consequential actions

Make approved integrations explicit and deny unreviewed ones by default. Separate lower-risk actions, such as reading a specified record, from actions with wider or irreversible effects. Require fresh human approval or just-in-time elevation for high-impact operations rather than leaving that authority continuously available to the agent.

Check authorization again at connected services

Confirm that each downstream service independently enforces the intended identity and scope. A central orchestrator or identity provider does not automatically constrain a connected service if that service accepts a broad credential or fails to recheck authorization. Test the actual path an action takes, including delegated user authority when used.

Credential, logging, and lifecycle controls

Make credentials short-lived and recoverable

Use managed or federated identity when the platform supports it. If a credential is necessary, keep it outside prompts and memory, scope it to the required access, set an expiry, and define who rotates and invalidates it. Include token invalidation and downstream permission removal in the shutdown plan; disabling an identity alone may not terminate access already granted through existing tokens or connected services.

Preserve enough context to investigate actions

Logs should let an investigator connect an action to the agent principal, its effective role and scope, the resource, the action taken, correlation context, and the initiating or delegating user where applicable. Ensure downstream logs preserve useful attribution, and review permission changes for unexpected expansion.

Re-review access when the system changes

Changes to an agent’s workflow, tools, data sources, or deployment can change what it can do even when its identity stays the same. Treat material changes as triggers for another authorization review, and remove grants that are no longer needed.

Emergency revocation: a practical exercise

There is no universal revocation-time target established by the cited guidance. Set an internal response objective appropriate to your systems, then measure whether the complete containment path meets it.

  1. Identify the principal and scope. Use the agent register and logs to locate its identity, active role assignments, credentials, connected tools, and any delegated authority.
  2. Disable the agent identity. Follow the identity provider’s supported procedure, and record when the disablement was requested and when it takes effect.
  3. Invalidate active credentials and tokens. Rotate or revoke credentials and check whether existing tokens or sessions remain usable.
  4. Remove downstream access. Revoke grants and credentials in connected services, including any access not automatically removed when the central identity is disabled.
  5. Verify enforcement end to end. Attempt or safely simulate the agent’s previously authorized actions in each relevant service. Confirm that access is denied and that logs identify the result.
  6. Recover and document. Follow the recovery steps for any erroneous or partial action, record system-by-system results and total revocation time, and update the procedure where the exercise exposed a gap.

How to evaluate an agent platform or architecture

Compare implementations by the controls they can enforce across the full workflow, not by feature labels alone.

  • Identity binding: Can each agent have a distinct principal and named owner? Can delegated user authority be represented and audited?
  • Scope enforcement: Can access be limited by resource, data, tool, operation, and duration, including in downstream systems?
  • Approval and elevation: Can higher-risk actions require fresh approval or time-limited privilege?
  • Revocation reach: Can administrators disable the identity, rotate credentials, invalidate active tokens, remove downstream grants, and verify the result?
  • Audit coverage: Do logs connect the agent, user or delegation, scope, action, resource, and correlation context across services?
  • Lifecycle governance: Can teams inventory identities, review access, find stale grants, and decommission agents cleanly?

Do not expand permissions reflexively when an agent receives an access-denied error. First verify that the requested action belongs within its approved purpose and scope; otherwise, the denial may be the control working as intended. AWS’s identity and permission management guidance specifically cautions against permission creep in response to denied access.

Governance responsibilities remain with the organization

Using an agent framework or cloud identity service does not transfer responsibility for deciding what the agent may access, which actions need oversight, or how the organization responds to misuse. Microsoft’s AI agent shared responsibility model identifies identity and least privilege, action authorization, oversight, and governance as responsibilities organizations retain. Microsoft’s Microsoft Entra security for AI overview also describes identity-based security, governance, and activity logging as parts of securing agents.
