Agentic AI in test automation uses an AI agent to plan and carry out testing tasks with tools that can inspect and operate an application, while a conventional test runner executes assertions. A practical workflow is to explore the app, create a test plan, generate executable tests, run them, inspect failures, and propose bounded repairs. The agent’s report is not proof that the product behaved correctly: teams still need to validate essential outcomes and review changes.

How agentic test automation works

Unlike code completion that only suggests text, an agent can use browser tools and execution results as feedback. It can investigate the running application, act on it, and revise a test based on what happened. Playwright documents this pattern through three roles—planner, generator, and healer—which can run independently, sequentially, or as a chained loop. Playwright’s test-agent documentation

  1. Give it context and limits. Provide the framework and version, current official documentation, runnable examples, project conventions, available commands, and a seed test or fixture setup. Expected behavior can come from requirements or a product requirements document.
  2. Explore and plan. A planner can explore the application and produce a human-readable plan of scenarios or user flows. A seed test can show how the project initializes its environment and fixtures.
  3. Generate and check. A generator turns the plan into executable tests and can check selectors and assertions against the live application while performing scenarios. Keep plans and tests in the repository so reviewers can compare intent with implementation.
  4. Execute and diagnose. Run the tests with browser automation, then give the agent concrete evidence from failures: the actual exception, logs, and a screenshot captured at failure time. Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, and documents isolated contexts, resilient locators, parallel execution, and traces. Playwright overview
  5. Repair within boundaries. A healer can replay failed steps, inspect the UI, propose a patch, and rerun the test until it passes or a guardrail stops it. A skipped result may indicate that the healer believes functionality is broken; it does not establish the correct expected behavior. Review proposed patches and keep ownership of expected outcomes with the team.
  6. Validate variation. An agent may reach the same goal through a different valid path, so check essential user-visible outcomes rather than demanding one exact sequence of actions. In a 2026 evaluation of an agent navigating Visual Studio Code by computer use, authors Gaurav Mittal and Reshabh Kumar Sharma report that their method builds a ground-truth model after observing 2–10 successful sessions. That figure describes their method and evaluation, not a universal sample-size rule. GitHub authors’ discussion of agent validation

Where agentic testing helps—and where deterministic tests fit

Agentic workflows are useful when testing depends on intent, context, or interaction: for example, whether a user can complete a meaningful workflow despite reasonable variation in navigation. Conventional tests, builds, and static analysis remain a better fit when expected results can be stated as crisp binary rules. GitHub describes agentic workflows as complementary to CI, not a replacement for it. As Idan Gazit, head of GitHub Next, put it in a February 5, 2026 article updated February 9, 2026: “Any time something can’t be expressed as a rule or a flow chart is a place where AI becomes incredibly helpful.” GitHub’s article on agentic workflows

How to make an AI testing workflow reliable

Supply current, project-specific references

State the deployed framework version and give the agent the corresponding current documentation and runnable examples. Selenium warns that an agent can reproduce stale APIs and patterns from learned examples; treat APIs absent from the current reference as unavailable until verified. Selenium’s agent guidance

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Prefer observed evidence over guessed selectors

Check proposed locators against the running app. Use real exceptions, logs, and failure-time screenshots to diagnose problems. Selenium cautions against fixed sleeps, absolute XPath, generated class names, and masking races simply by increasing timeouts. Prefer selectors tied to stable user-facing attributes and explicit conditions that represent the state the test needs.

Keep permissions and repairs bounded

  • Limit which files, commands, and environments the agent can access.
  • Define permitted outputs and log agent activity.
  • Require review of generated tests and code changes; do not treat an agent’s passing report as approval to merge.
  • Set a clear stopping condition for repair loops, such as a maximum number of attempts or a required human review.
  • Run tests again when timing or nondeterminism could affect the result, and verify the essential user-visible behavior.

What to compare when choosing an agentic testing setup

Compare capabilities that affect your workflow rather than assuming one framework or hosted service is universally more effective. The available documentation supports a capability comparison, not a controlled head-to-head effectiveness ranking.

Decision area Questions to ask
Browser and language coverage Which browsers and programming languages are supported, and do they match your application and existing tests?
Access to the real application Can the agent inspect and interact with the application in the environment where the relevant behavior occurs?
Project and CI integration Can it use existing fixtures and commands, and how does it fit alongside deterministic CI checks?
Plans and generated tests Are the test plan and generated code visible and reviewable in your repository?
Isolation and parallelism How are browser contexts and test data isolated, and can tests run concurrently safely?
Failure evidence Can the workflow provide useful traces, logs, exceptions, and screenshots from the failure?
Repair controls Can you restrict permissions, bound retries, and require review of proposed changes?
Operating model Do you want to manage the framework and browsers yourself, or use a hosted browser or device platform?

Playwright’s overview describes Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit support, isolation, locators, parallelism, accessibility snapshots, CLI/MCP interfaces, and traces. Selenium’s guidance emphasizes current documentation, stable locators, explicit waits, and application-specific verification. Which capabilities matter most depends on your app, existing test stack, and operational constraints.

Capture browser evidence for agents

Browser inspection often produces screenshots that help an agent understand the UI or diagnose a failure. A screenshot is supporting evidence, not a substitute for a test assertion: use the test runner to verify the expected behavior and keep the screenshot tied to the relevant run or failure.
