Agent Pigeon is a local command-line tool that summarizes completed Claude Code and Codex sessions. Its reports surface recorded reads and edits, recognized verification runs, failures followed by passes, and other activity signals—so you can decide which original session to inspect. They are not a full reconstruction or a score of an agent’s work.
Why build a session-inspection CLI?
A coding agent’s final response can leave out the edits, checks, and retries that led to the result. Jay_Stride introduced Agent Pigeon to make some of that activity easier to inspect without treating the final answer as the whole story. The author disclosed that AI tools helped draft and edit the post and assisted with parts of the launch workflow. Read the original DEV Community article.
Agent Pigeon reads completed local session histories and produces compact reports. Think of a report as an index into a session: it can point you toward a retry or a verification run, but it cannot establish that the agent’s work was correct or explain every action. The repository puts it plainly: “Reports are prompts to inspect, not grades.” Agent Pigeon repository.
What the commands show
The project documents commands for one session, a session corpus, and a pairwise comparison. Their useful distinction is scope, not a ranking of models.

Documentation also lists report details such as the largest debugging loop, most-touched file, and longest stretch of coding without recognized verification. These are observed signals to follow up on in the original history, not independent measures of performance. The project documents SVG output through share flight and share compare.
Why READ: N/A is not the same as READ: 0
Read counts depend on what a session format exposes. The author says Claude Code records Read calls directly, while Codex may do reads inside broader exec commands that do not expose each read as a separately attributable event. In that situation, a count of zero would overstate what the parser knows.

As the author explains, “READ: N/A” means the parser cannot count reliably; “READ: 0” would imply it saw the full set and found none. The distinction matters: unavailable evidence should not be mistaken for evidence that no reads occurred.
How to interpret a report’s limits
- Verification detection is heuristic. It recognizes some verification runs but can miss custom scripts or checks.
- A FAIL→PASS sequence is only a sequence. It shows a failure followed by a pass; it cannot prove which edit caused the successful result.
- Session span includes idle time. The span runs from the first to the last recorded event, not necessarily continuous work time.
- EDIT counts are file events. They do not state how many lines changed or how large the resulting diff was.
- Read attribution can be unavailable. When the history does not support a reliable count, the report may show N/A rather than a number.
The author says incomplete event histories led to false positives and noisy live warnings during experiments; the public CLI therefore reads completed sessions in read-only mode. A report is most useful as a way to locate evidence worth reviewing, not as proof of causation or quality.

Install and run Agent Pigeon
The repository currently documents Node.js 20.11 or newer and a global npm install. The quick report can also be run directly with npx.

What it reads, and the project’s platform claims
The repository says Agent Pigeon reads session histories in ~/.claude/projects and ~/.codex/sessions. It says the tool runs read-only: it does not read project source code, write state or cache, or transmit data. Its output consists of aggregate counts and short session IDs rather than source code, diffs, commands, or prompts. These are the project’s published claims, not independently reproduced test results.
The repository lists Windows 11 and Linux (Debian 12, Node 20, Docker) as tested and macOS as untested. It also lists an MIT license. Check the repository for the current compatibility and licensing details before relying on them.

What the published example can—and cannot—tell you
The DEV article says its GIF uses sanitized synthetic history. Its displayed counts are therefore an illustration of report format, not measured results about real coding-agent performance. Neither the article nor repository publishes an independent study or a named statistic comparing agents.
