An agent’s current working directory (CWD) tells tools where relative paths start; it does not, by itself, define what files the agent can access or what survives after a run. In the OpenAI Agents SDK, workspace persistence depends on session and snapshot configuration, and mounted or ephemeral content is excluded from durable workspace snapshots. Other products may behave differently.
Myth 1: CWD is the sandbox boundary
CWD is a path-resolution default, not an access-control rule. In the OpenAI Agents SDK sandbox guide, relative paths used by built-in command, image, and patch tools resolve from the run’s configured CWD. Session-level file APIs instead use workspace-root-relative paths, as described in the Workspace Paths reference.
To understand what an agent can read or change, check the configured sandbox and workspace boundary as well as CWD. A working directory alone does not establish the full access boundary.

Myth 2: If the agent can see a file, it will be saved
Visibility during a run does not guarantee that a file will be part of durable saved workspace state. The SDK documents snapshot restore and archiving for runner-owned sessions, but persistence depends on the session lifecycle and usable snapshot configuration. When a usable snapshot is unavailable, the guide describes fallback behavior rather than guaranteeing automatic backup of every run.

Mounted and ephemeral paths are not included as durable workspace contents in these snapshots. The Python guide says they are not copied into snapshots; the OpenAI API Sandbox Agents guide likewise describes snapshot persistence skipping mounted remote storage. A file may therefore be available to a run without being preserved in its workspace snapshot.
Myth 3: Cleanup means every byte is deleted
Workspace archiving, snapshot persistence, and cleanup of temporary files are different behaviors. The OpenAI documentation describes session and snapshot handling, but does not establish a universal guarantee that every temporary file is deleted after every exit mode, including crashes, forced termination, or cleanup failures.

Check the cleanup guarantees for the specific runner and provider you use, especially if the data is sensitive or retention matters. Do not infer a deletion timeline or complete disk reclamation from the word “sandbox.”
Myth 4: Every agent starts in the same directory
Defaults are product-specific. OpenAI-hosted sandboxes use /workspace as the default working directory, and a command can set its own CWD, according to the OpenAI-hosted sandboxes documentation. In the Agents SDK, a run can configure a workspace-relative CWD.

When a relative path behaves unexpectedly, confirm the CWD for that run or command rather than assuming another agent’s default applies.
Myth 5: CWD and conversation memory are the same thing
They are separate forms of state. CWD is part of sandbox run configuration; workspace persistence concerns files and saved sandbox state. Conversation history concerns messages in a session. The OpenAI API guide distinguishes sandbox configuration and saved state from the conversational session concept, so retaining one does not, by itself, establish that the other was retained.

What to check when configuring an agent workspace
For the documented OpenAI implementations, these questions help distinguish path behavior from persistence behavior:
- Path resolution: Does a tool resolve relative paths from the run’s CWD, while file APIs use workspace-root-relative paths?
- Session lifecycle: Does a run create a fresh session, reuse one, or resume saved state?
- Snapshots: Is snapshot restore or archiving configured for the session?
- Mounts: Are mounted paths included in saved state, or excluded from durable snapshots?
- Cleanup: What does the provider document for ordinary completion and abnormal exits?
These checks describe documented OpenAI behavior, not a cross-provider ranking or a guarantee about every agent environment.
