AGEIA released RealityMark Version 1.0 on October 11, 2006, as a demonstration of how its PhysX accelerator handled a physics-heavy game scene compared with physics calculated in software by the CPU. The benchmark replayed a sequence derived from CellFactor: Combat Training, so its scores describe that particular workload—not game physics in general or modern PC performance.

What was AGEIA RealityMark?

RealityMark was a downloadable benchmark built to demonstrate AGEIA PhysX hardware acceleration. Contemporary reports describe it as a replay of a scene from CellFactor: Combat Training, with numerous objects and physics interactions. PC Watch reported a download size of 378 MB in 2006.

The test presented two calculation paths: physics processed by an AGEIA PhysX card and physics calculated by the CPU in software. That made the benchmark useful as a period demonstration of the accelerator, but its results reflected a single game-derived sequence and the specific PCs used to run it.

Did RealityMark require a PhysX card?

Not necessarily to run the program. PC Watch and 4Gamer reported that RealityMark could operate without the accelerator, allowing a software calculation run. However, PC Watch said the hardware-result field showed a fixed value when no PhysX card was present. A card was therefore needed to measure actual PhysX hardware acceleration, even if software-only operation was possible. 4Gamer listed an AGEIA PhysX accelerator and PhysX system software version 2.5.1 or later in the benchmark’s environment requirements.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How much faster was PhysX in RealityMark?

ComputerBase’s October 11, 2006 report showed 45.94 points for an AGEIA PhysX hardware configuration and 3.82 points for an Intel Core 2 X6800 software configuration. Across the configurations it covered, ComputerBase characterized the reported performance difference as roughly 8 to 20 times in favor of PhysX hardware.

Those figures are results from the configurations in that report, not a universal speed ratio. ComputerBase cautioned that dual-core CPUs were not being used close to fully, which could distort the comparison. RealityMark’s one replayed workload also cannot establish how PhysX would perform across other games, physics tasks, or hardware combinations.

What PCs did the 2006 requirements describe?

PC Watch listed Windows XP and these minimum specifications:

  • Pentium 4 or Celeron at 1.5 GHz or faster, or Athlon XP 2400+ or faster
  • DirectX 9.0-compatible graphics with at least 128 MB of video memory
  • At least 1 GB of main memory

Those are historical requirements for the software as reported in 2006, not a recommendation or guarantee that RealityMark will install or work on a current PC. The distinction matters: contemporary coverage described software-only operation, while an actual hardware-accelerated measurement depended on a PhysX card.

How did RealityMark fit into 2006 benchmarking?

RealityMark was distinct from 3DMark06. Futuremark announced on September 27, 2006, that AGEIA had joined its 3DMark Benchmark Development Program, a collaboration focused on evaluating emerging technology and hardware through benchmark development. Separately, Futuremark’s 3DMark06 Whitepaper v1.0.2 says that physics in its CPU tests were computed using the AGEIA PhysX library. That provides industry context, but it does not make RealityMark and 3DMark06 the same test or make their results interchangeable.
