There is no universal winner: choose Adyen when global or in-person payments and local methods are central; Stripe when developer speed or a flexible marketplace model matters most; and Braintree when accepting PayPal alongside cards through one integration is a priority. The best fit depends on your countries, payment mix, platform model, compliance needs, and the fees in your actual pricing schedule.
How the three integrations compare
| Decision factor | Adyen | Stripe | Braintree |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payment coverage | Online and in-person payments, with global and local methods through its payments platform. | 100+ payment methods and access in 195 countries, as stated on Stripe’s pricing page accessed October 1, 2026. | Cards, PayPal, wallets, and local methods; availability depends on the banking partner and region. |
| Marketplace and platform capabilities | Platform APIs, payouts, and documented marketplace use cases. | Connect provides connected accounts, fee collection, and choices about pricing and monetization. | Marketplace features are documented alongside its payment, vaulting, and recurring-billing tools. |
| Developer workflow | API Explorer, client libraries, and webhooks. | Sample code, CLI testing, versioned APIs, webhooks, and test environments. | SDKs, Drop-in and Hosted Fields options, sandbox testing, and documented go-live steps. |
| Pricing signal | Fixed processing fee plus a method-dependent fee; the displayed transaction pricing states no setup or monthly fees. | Public standard US domestic-card rate, with additional charges for some international cards and currency conversion. | Pricing is account-specific; merchant pricing schedules determine several fees. |
| In-person payments | Explicitly supported. | Check availability and product fit for your target country and terminal needs. | In-store payments are documented. |
These are product-level distinctions, not a guarantee that every method, feature, or pricing arrangement is available to every business. Check eligibility for each country and payment flow you intend to launch.
What each provider is best suited to
Adyen: global operations and online-to-in-person payments
Adyen is worth evaluating when one provider needs to support online and in-person transactions, local payment methods, payouts, and platform use cases. Its API Explorer documents marketplace scenarios including peer-to-peer marketplaces, on-demand services, and crowdfunding. Its card guide describes support for most global and local card methods through one technical integration, as well as client-side PCI-compliant collection options.
Adyen’s displayed pricing uses a fixed processing fee plus a fee determined by the payment method. Its pricing page stated no setup or monthly fees as of October 1, 2026. The method fee and availability vary by geography, so price the actual country and method combination rather than treating this as one universal rate. Before selecting it, check onboarding requirements, capture and settlement options, PCI scope, and any volume-based pricing offered to your business.

#1 Best Overall
Stripe: developer workflow and platform flexibility
Stripe’s Payments product emphasizes a self-serve development workflow: sample code, a CLI for development and testing, versioned API changes, webhooks, test environments, metadata, and libraries for common programming languages. That can suit a product team that wants to build and validate payment flows directly against well-documented APIs.
Stripe’s current pricing page, accessed October 1, 2026, lists 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic-card transaction as its standard US rate. Some international cards and currency conversions add fees; country-specific prices and custom packages may differ. Use the rate as a US standard-price reference, not a global quote.
Rank #2
For platforms, Stripe Connect supports connected accounts and fee collection, with operating models that let Stripe or the platform handle pricing for users. Stripe says qualifying platforms may be eligible for revenue share, subject to requirements. Its Connect page says pricing starts at 2.9% + 30¢ per successful card charge; confirm which charges and additional platform costs apply to your planned configuration.
Braintree: PayPal and cards in one integration
Braintree’s clearest differentiator is its combined PayPal-and-card integration. Its developer documentation also covers wallets, local methods, vaulting, fraud tools, 3D Secure 2, disputes, reporting, webhooks, in-store payments, OAuth, marketplace features, and recurring billing. PayPal use cases include one-time, vaulted, and recurring payments.

Method availability depends on the banking partner and region. Braintree’s documentation also identifies some newer PayPal flows as US-only, so verify eligibility for the specific flow and account you expect to use. Implementing a method can require configuring it, changing the client interface, adding server-side handling, and testing both sandbox and production behavior.
Braintree’s pricing guide says PayPal transactions have no additional Braintree fee. Discount, per-transaction, cross-border, and chargeback fees are determined by the merchant’s pricing schedule. Request and compare that schedule; do not assume Stripe’s public standard rate applies to a Braintree account.

How to compare the total cost
A headline card rate is only one part of payment cost. Build a transaction model around how your customers actually pay and how your platform routes funds.
- Use the countries where you will charge, the currencies you will settle, and the payment methods and wallets customers are likely to use.
- Include domestic and international card pricing, currency conversion, method-specific charges, disputes or chargebacks, and payout fees where applicable.
- For a marketplace, establish who collects fees, who sets pricing for sellers or connected accounts, and whether the provider’s platform charges are separate from processing.
- Ask each provider for pricing tied to your expected volume, country mix, payment methods, and business model. Compare equivalent scenarios rather than one advertised rate against another provider’s negotiated schedule.
Integration and operational checks before choosing
Payment processing is an ongoing operational dependency, not just a checkout component. Evaluate the full path from customer entry to reconciliation and support.

- Business model: Decide whether you are a direct merchant, marketplace, SaaS platform, or payment facilitator. Map who receives funds and who is responsible for seller onboarding and pricing.
- Security and risk: Map PCI DSS scope, tokenization or vaulting, 3DS2, fraud controls, disputes, and refunds against your compliance and risk requirements.
- Engineering: Test high-value payment paths in each provider’s sandbox, including errors, asynchronous webhook events, refunds, and any marketplace or recurring flow you need. Confirm production onboarding requirements before setting a launch date.
- Operations: Review reporting, reconciliation, data portability, account migration, and support arrangements. These affect the cost of switching as well as day-to-day payment operations.
A practical decision rule
Start with the provider that best matches your non-negotiable requirements, then verify its regional availability and total quoted cost. If international local methods and in-person payments are central, put Adyen first on the shortlist. If engineering workflow or control over marketplace monetization is the main concern, evaluate Stripe and Connect. If PayPal alongside cards is strategically important, examine Braintree’s regional eligibility and account-specific schedule. If no provider clears your requirements across payment methods, operations, and pricing, keep more than one under consideration until those gaps are resolved.
