Processor features matter when they change how your computer handles the applications you use, its power and cooling needs, graphics, or platform compatibility. Core count, thread count, boost clock, and cache size are useful clues—not standalone measures of which CPU is best. To compare processors, check how their features fit your workload and the exact system you plan to build or buy.
What do CPU cores and threads mean?
Cores are processing hardware; threads are units of work
A CPU core is a physical processing unit. A software thread is a sequence of instructions a program can run. Some processors can handle more than one software thread on a physical core using a technology called simultaneous multithreading (SMT). Intel calls its implementation Hyper-Threading; AMD describes SMT in its Zen architecture.
Logical thread count is not a direct performance score. Running multiple threads on a core can help keep its resources busy, but it does not turn one core into two full cores or automatically double performance. The benefit depends on whether an application can divide its work effectively and on the processor’s design.
Support also varies by model. Intel’s Hyper-Threading reference explains the technology, while its 14th Gen Core desktop brief specifies that Hyper-Threading is available only on Performance-cores for the processors described there. Check the exact CPU’s specifications rather than assuming every core or processor supports it.

What are P-cores and E-cores?
Some Intel processors use a hybrid design that combines different core types on one chip. In Intel’s supported hybrid designs, Performance-cores (P-cores) prioritize demanding work, while Efficient-cores (E-cores) are designed for efficiency and throughput. Intel describes this approach in its 14th Gen Core desktop brief as combining two core microarchitectures on one processor die.
Hybrid processors rely on the operating system to assign work to cores. Intel’s hybrid-design explainer describes Thread Director as helping the operating system make scheduling decisions. That assistance does not guarantee a speedup: results depend on the workload, software, operating-system support, and the processor model. Other vendors and generations may use different designs and terminology.

Does a higher boost clock mean a faster computer?
Not necessarily. A boost clock is a conditional operating frequency, not a promise that the processor will run at that speed continuously or across all cores. Workload, power, current, and temperature limits affect how high a CPU can boost and for how long. Intel notes that time spent in Turbo Boost depends on the workload and operating environment in its Turbo Boost support reference. Its Core Ultra Series 2 desktop brief likewise describes Turbo Boost as operating above rated frequency when power, current, and temperature limits permit.
Specifications also may describe different boost conditions. AMD defines maximum boost on its Zen architecture page as the maximum frequency achievable by a single core on a bursty single-thread workload. That is AMD’s definition, not a universal cross-vendor standard. For a meaningful comparison, look for performance results in the applications you use and consider the power and cooling limits of the complete system.

What does CPU cache do?
Cache is fast storage on the processor that keeps selected data close to processing resources. If needed data is available there, the CPU may avoid fetching it from slower system memory, reducing access latency. Cache is arranged in a hierarchy, and its implementation differs across processor designs.
Intel describes Smart Cache as shared among P-cores, E-cores, and processor graphics where applicable in its Core Ultra Series 2 desktop brief. AMD describes cache as part of its Zen architecture. A larger cache number alone does not establish that one CPU will be faster: workload, cache organization, and the rest of the architecture matter. Similarly named cache figures are not necessarily directly comparable across vendors or generations.

Do you need integrated graphics or an NPU?
Integrated graphics
Integrated graphics can handle display output and some graphics workloads without a separate graphics card, but capability varies by processor. If you need to run a display before installing a discrete GPU, use graphics applications, or play games, check the exact CPU’s graphics specification and the system’s memory configuration. Do not assume that every model in a processor family includes graphics.
Neural processing units
An NPU is a separate processing capability intended to accelerate supported AI workloads. Intel’s Core Ultra Series 2 desktop brief says select processors include a CPU, GPU, and NPU. Its Core Ultra Series 1 desktop brief describes AI Boost as an integrated AI engine for low-power acceleration and CPU/GPU offload. These are generation- and model-specific descriptions, not guarantees that every AI application will use an NPU. Confirm that the exact processor has one and that your software supports it; a discrete GPU may still be needed for other graphics or compute tasks.

How should you compare processors?
Start with the applications and system you actually need. Manufacturer specifications can tell you which features a processor offers, but a spec sheet alone cannot establish an overall winner. No neutral, workload-specific benchmark comparison is established here, so treat vendor performance claims as tied to their stated models and test conditions.
- Match performance to your workload. Check results for the applications you use. Separate lightly threaded tasks from work that can use many cores, such as suitable rendering or encoding workloads.
- Consider sustained performance. A processor’s behavior depends on its power limits and operating temperature. Check whether the cooler, case, and system power settings can support the performance you need.
- Settle graphics needs. Verify whether the exact CPU includes integrated graphics and whether its capability is sufficient, or whether you need a discrete GPU.
- Verify model-specific features and software support. Check the exact SKU for SMT or Hyper-Threading, hybrid cores, an NPU, and the applications or operating-system features you intend to use.
- Confirm platform compatibility. Check the motherboard socket, supported memory, and other requirements for the processor and motherboard combination.
- Compare total system cost. Include the motherboard, memory, cooler, and any graphics card required. A CPU’s price or specification is only one part of the system decision.
For Intel Core and AMD Ryzen candidates, use each manufacturer’s current product specifications to confirm the exact model and platform details; feature names and availability can vary across generations and SKUs.
