Its standout additions expanded workflow options rather than promising a universal speed boost: editors could keep projects open together, use Shared Projects with locking, and review VR footage in an immersive environment. For straightforward cutting of conventional video, the update was less transformative.
What changed in Premiere Pro CC 2018?
Adobe said the 2017 release introduced more than 170 new features across Premiere Pro and Media Encoder combined—not 170 features in Premiere Pro alone. Its October 2017 product overview described multiple open projects and simultaneous team editing as central capabilities. Adobe called Premiere Pro “the only NLE on the market” to offer them together; that was Adobe’s market claim, not an independently verified comparison.
Multiple open projects
Editors could keep more than one project open and copy media or sequences between them. That made a scene-by-scene or episode-by-episode structure more practical: work could be divided into smaller projects without repeatedly closing one and reopening another to transfer material.
Shared Projects and Team Projects
Shared Projects let multiple editors or assistants access a project on shared storage. Project locking helped prevent simultaneous changes from overwriting one another, while read-only access let viewers inspect a project. This was a different workflow from Team Projects, Adobe’s cloud-based collaboration feature.

- Bluetooth Connectivity
- Rechargeable Battery
Team Projects received refinements rather than a wholesale redesign. Editors gained personal auto-save history, the ability to recover an asset from an earlier auto-save or create a Team Project from one, clearer collaborator-status badges, reminders to share changes, and a more discoverable version history. Team Projects also worked with the multiple-open-project workflow.
Motion graphics and Essential Graphics
CC 2018 built on Essential Graphics and Motion Graphics templates introduced in the preceding release. Responsive Design controls for time and position gave editors more ways to manage how template elements behaved as graphics changed. These were workflow improvements to an existing graphics system, not the introduction of an entirely new panel.

- Built for video editors: Premiere Pro's most-used commands come pre-mapped one per key, named and color-coded so you can scan quickly while you cut.
- Remap anything in KeyStudio, the browser-based remapping tool we built for Dash keyboard. Nothing to install, and the layout saves onto the keyboard so it works the same on every machine you use.
- 20 spare shortcut keycaps in the box: move the keys to match the way you actually cut and grade, rather than learning someone else's layout.
- The compact, low-profile design frees desk space and keeps your mouse within reach for better posture. Winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award in 2025 and designed in Vancouver, Canada. We've been building tools for creative work since 2009, and every Dash comes a 12 month warranty.
- Tri-mode connection across Mac, PC, iOS, iPadOS, Android and Linux: Bluetooth for three devices, 2.4GHz wireless or USB-C wired, on a 3500mAh battery good for 450 hours.
Immersive video and VR
For 360-degree productions, Adobe added the Adobe Immersive Environment for viewing a timeline through a head-mounted display, along with VR-oriented effects and transitions. The named additions included VR De-Noise, VR Blur, VR Sharpen, VR Iris Wipe, VR Light Leaks, and VR Rotate Sphere. These features mattered to immersive-video editors, but offered little direct benefit to a conventional flat-video workflow.
Smaller usability changes
- A single command could close gaps in a timeline.
- Eight additional label colors expanded project organization options.
- Search Bins gained label support.
How significant was the update for different editors?
| Workflow | Why CC 2018 mattered | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Several editors sharing a project | Shared Projects added locking and read-only access for shared-storage work; Team Projects gained recovery, status, and version-history refinements. | Shared Projects and cloud-based Team Projects addressed different collaboration setups. |
| Large or episodic productions | Multiple open projects made it easier to move sequences and media among scene- or episode-level projects. | The feature improves project organization and transfer workflow; it is not evidence of faster rendering or playback. |
| Titles and motion graphics | Responsive Design controls extended the Essential Graphics and Motion Graphics template workflow. | The value is greatest when graphics are created or revised in Premiere. |
| 360-degree and VR productions | Immersive timeline viewing and VR-specific effects supported specialized review and editing needs. | These are specialized capabilities, not a general advantage for ordinary video projects. |
| Basic conventional editing | Timeline gap closing and additional label options offered modest convenience. | The major collaboration, multi-project, graphics, and VR changes may not alter a simple cutting workflow substantially. |
What did reviewers think?
ITPro characterized the multiple-project, shared-project, and VR additions as “killer new features,” and its review treated Responsive Design as an improvement to Essential Graphics. Expert Reviews also assessed the release positively, emphasizing collaboration, VR, and multiple projects. Those are reviewers’ judgments, not measured proof of better performance or stability on every computer and project.

What should you know about compatibility?
Version changes could affect whether a project opened in an older release. Adobe’s April 2018 update note said versions 2018.0 and 2018.1 could not be installed in parallel, and projects saved in the newer version could not be opened in previous Premiere Pro versions. In an October 2018 notice for version 13.0, Adobe likewise warned that projects created or saved in 13.0 were not backward-compatible with version 12 releases.
- Coordinate versions with collaborators before updating a shared production.
- Keep a backup before opening and saving a project in a newer release.
- Do not assume an older and newer release can be installed side by side; check the installer guidance for the specific versions involved.
Exact minimum hardware and operating-system requirements for CC 2018 are not established here. Current Premiere Pro requirements should not be treated as the requirements for this historical release.

Is Premiere Pro CC 2018 still worth considering?
As a historical release, CC 2018 is most notable for broadening how production teams could organize and share work. Multiple open projects and Shared Projects were its most substantial changes for collaborative or episodic productions; graphics and VR additions served more specialized needs. ITPro and Expert Reviews were positive, but their assessments do not establish universal gains in speed or stability.
This review describes version 12.x, not the current Premiere Pro product or a recommendation to obtain an old installer. Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018 Classroom in a Book is a release-specific learning title that may help readers studying the old interface, but it may not match current software, and its present availability is unverified.
