Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If an Adobe Muse contact form displays “The server encountered an error,” that message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Check the live PHP error logs and the deployed form-handler files before changing the script again. The SitePoint discussion behind this error does not include the modified code, server logs, or a confirmed fix, so it cannot identify the failing line.
What the SitePoint report does—and does not—establish
In an October 2019 SitePoint thread, the poster said the site was built with Adobe Muse and hosted at GoDaddy, with form messages intended for a Zoho Mail address. At first, the visitor saw “Form received,” but no email appeared in the mailbox. The poster later modified the PHP script to add SMTP code and reported that the browser then displayed “The server encountered an error.” Read the SitePoint discussion.
The thread includes a generated PHP handler identifying Adobe Muse CC 2018.1.1.386. That handler requires form_process.php and calls process_form($form). The processing code shown checks the request and required fields, then uses PHP’s mail() function. This is code pasted into the forum, not a verified inspection of the live site. The later SMTP-modified script and any server error details are missing, so the cause and outcome remain unknown.
A reply also noted invalid HTML in the supplied form markup, but did not establish that this was the only problem. The sequence—adding SMTP code and then seeing a different message—makes the edit a sensible place to investigate, but does not prove it caused the error.

What to check first
- Find the server-side error for the failed request. Open the hosting control panel’s PHP or error logs and the web server logs, then look around the time you submitted the form. The browser’s generic message does not reveal whether the failure was a PHP parse error, a missing include, an SMTP problem, or another issue. The SitePoint report supplies no log entry to narrow it down.
- Confirm which files are actually deployed. Check that the live form submits to the expected PHP handler and that the handler and
form_process.phpare in the locations expected by the code. Verify the live files rather than assuming the forum’s pasted version matches what is on the server. - Check that the PHP code runs before investigating delivery. Use the log to determine whether the handler parses and runs, and whether its required fields and request checks pass. If you recently added SMTP code, inspect that change alongside the exact logged error; do not infer a specific broken line from the browser message alone.
- Ask the host which mail transport the account supports. Confirm whether the hosting environment supports PHP’s built-in
mail()with a configured local transport, requires authenticated SMTP, or restricts outbound connections to an external mail provider. Ask for the supported configuration for the account and its logging options rather than assuming a mail-provider hostname can be added to generic PHP settings.
Why “Form received” does not prove email delivery
The original Muse processing code shown in the thread calls PHP mail(). PHP’s manual explains that a true return value means the message was accepted for delivery; it does not confirm that the recipient received it. Filtering, routing, or rejection can still prevent arrival. Check the application’s result and the host’s mail logs separately from the recipient mailbox. PHP: mail.
PHP mail settings depend on the server
PHP documents different configuration mechanisms for different environments: SMTP and smtp_port apply to PHP on Windows, while sendmail_path is commonly used in other server configurations. Those settings are not a universal recipe for connecting a Muse form to an email provider. The relevant setup depends on the hosting operating system and mail transport. PHP: Runtime Configuration.

The poster’s mention of GoDaddy and Zoho identifies the services in that 2019 report, not their current account settings or the transport supported by a particular hosting plan. Ask the host whether the account permits the intended transport and outbound connections, and follow the applicable provider and host instructions.

Related SitePoint discussions from 2014 and 2016 include community suggestions to use PHPMailer and edit Muse’s PHP handler. Those historical snippets are not validated against current PHP or library versions, and they do not diagnose this user’s error. Avoid pasting one into a live form as a drop-in fix. First establish the failure from current server logs and the host’s supported configuration; if authenticated SMTP is required, use instructions and a library version supported for the current environment.
