Paid Adobe Acrobat plans add tools to create, edit and convert PDFs; Acrobat Pro also includes advanced features such as redaction and making scanned documents editable. “Acrobat” refers to a family of products, so the practical choice is between Reader, Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Pro—not simply between two apps.

What can you do with Adobe Acrobat Reader for free?
Reader is more than a PDF preview window. Adobe describes it as a free, standalone application for opening, viewing, signing, printing, annotating, searching and sharing PDF files. It can also fill forms. If your documents are mostly for reading, reviewing, completing or signing, Reader may be all you need.
Signing a document and requesting signatures from other people are different workflows. Adobe’s FAQ says signature requests are available without a subscription only in limited quantity; a subscription is needed for more. Don’t assume every signature-request workflow is unlimited or free.
#1 Best Overall
- Create and edit PDFs. Collaborate with ease. E-sign documents and collect signatures. Get everything done in one app, wherever you go.
- Edit text and images without jumping to another app.
- E-sign documents or request e-signatures on any device. Recipients don’t need to log in to e-sign.
- Convert PDFs to editable Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents.
- Share PDFs for collaboration. Commenting features make it easy for reviewers to comment, mark up, and annotate.
What does paid Acrobat add?
Acrobat Standard
Standard adds core PDF-production tools: create, edit, convert, export and organize PDFs. Adobe also lists signature collection and tracking, form filling and signing, and password protection. Choose it if you regularly need to change PDF content or work with PDFs beyond reading and annotation.
Acrobat Pro
Pro includes the core PDF tools and adds advanced capabilities Adobe lists, including redacting sensitive information, creating web forms and turning scans into editable PDFs. These are the key reasons to consider Pro over Standard; the choice depends on whether those specific workflows matter to you.
Rank #2
Which version should you choose?
- Choose Reader if you mainly read, print, search, annotate, fill out or sign PDFs.
- Compare Standard if you often need to edit PDF text or images, create or convert files, organize PDFs, or collect and track signatures.
- Consider Pro if you need the advanced features Adobe lists for it, especially redaction, web forms or making scanned documents editable.
If you only need an occasional premium task, check Adobe’s current plan options and whether the particular tool is available through a service or trial before subscribing. The comparison here does not establish that every premium workflow is available under every plan or in every region.
How much do Acrobat Standard and Pro cost?
On Adobe’s U.S. plan comparison page, checked October 7, 2026, Reader was free, Standard was US$14.99 per month, and Pro was US$19.99 per month. Those paid prices were for annual billing paid monthly. They are a dated U.S. snapshot, not a universal or permanent price: Adobe offers other payment choices, and availability and pricing can vary by region and plan version. Check Adobe’s [current pricing page] for the option that applies to you.
Rank #3
Which devices support Acrobat Reader?
Adobe lists Reader for Windows 10 and 11, macOS 10.15 (Catalina) and later, iOS 16 and later, and Android 8.0 and later. Adobe also offers browser access through Acrobat web. Requirements can change, so confirm the latest details on Adobe’s [Reader page] before installing.
Adobe’s Reader page also reports more than 500 million installs globally. That is an Adobe-reported cumulative install figure; the page does not state a measurement period or publication year, and installs should not be read as active users.
