Adobe Acrobat Reader—currently described in Adobe’s help pages as Acrobat on mobile—is a free app for iOS and Android for reading and managing PDFs. Its free tools include search, comments and annotations, form filling and signing, and PDF sharing. More advanced editing and export tools require a subscription, while AI Assistant access is limited for free users. Features can also vary by platform.
What the free mobile app can do
Adobe’s Acrobat Mobile App FAQs for Android and iOS, last updated June 8, 2026, describes Acrobat as a free mobile app for viewing and managing PDF files. Adobe lists these everyday capabilities among its free features:
- Open and read PDFs, and search for text within them.
- Add comments and annotations, including highlights and sticky notes.
- Fill in PDF forms and add a signature.
- Share PDFs. Adobe describes sharing controls as including secure sharing and access management; that is Adobe’s product description, not an independent security assessment.
Some tools that change a PDF’s content or convert it to another format are subscription-dependent; see the editing section below.
Reading, navigation, and hands-free access
Acrobat on mobile offers controls for both screen comfort and moving through a document. Adobe’s Acrobat Reader on mobile overview, last updated May 30, 2026, describes:

- Reading comfort: Dark Mode, Low Light, Full Screen, brightness adjustments, and controls for text size and color.
- Page layout: single-page or continuous scrolling.
- Small-screen reading: Liquid Mode reformats supported PDF content into a more phone-friendly layout.
- Navigation: in-document search, bookmarks, and other navigation tools.
- Listening: an option to have PDFs read aloud.
These tools are useful when a PDF is difficult to read at its original page size or when listening is more practical than reading onscreen.
Commenting, reviewing, and sharing PDFs
For review, the free annotation tools let you mark up a document with highlights, comments, and sticky notes. Adobe’s mobile productivity guide, last updated May 6, 2026, also describes @mentions in shared PDFs. These tools support feedback and collaboration, but they are not the same as editing the underlying text or layout of a PDF.
Adobe’s FAQ also describes sharing features with access controls. Check the sharing options shown in the app for the document and account you are using rather than assuming that every control is available for every file or workflow.

Filling and signing forms
Adobe says Acrobat on mobile supports Acroforms and the Fill & Sign workflow, including online and offline completion. You can enter text in fields, select checkboxes or dropdowns, and add a handwritten signature using a finger or stylus. A stylus is optional; finger input works.
Review a form carefully before saving a signature. Adobe says that saving flattens the document and makes signatures and initials permanent: you cannot remove the signature or edit the saved signed form. Some shared or password-protected files also have signing restrictions.

Mobile form limits
- Acrobat mobile does not open XFA forms.
- Changing a form’s structure is supported in desktop Acrobat, not the mobile app.
- Once a signed form is saved, it cannot be edited or unsigned.

Organizing files and editing PDF content
The mobile overview lists file-management options such as renaming, moving, and deleting files, managing folders and collections, and combining multiple PDFs. These organizational tasks are distinct from editing text or rebuilding a document.

Adobe’s current FAQ places advanced editing, export, password protection, and other advanced tools behind subscription access. Its dedicated help pages specifically state that adding text and inserting pages require an Acrobat subscription:

The page-insertion workflow differs by platform: Adobe’s Android instructions include scanning a new page into the PDF, while its iOS instructions list inserting another file or a blank page. Check the steps shown for your device before starting.

AI Assistant and PDF Spaces
Adobe describes AI Assistant as a way to ask questions about documents, get summaries, and create content. Its mobile AI help page says responses can link back to the source material. PDF Spaces lets users group files and ask questions across multiple documents.
Access depends on the account and entitlement. Adobe says free users receive a limited number of AI Assistant requests, while full access is available through eligible subscriptions, including an AI Assistant add-on. It does not establish a request quota or price here, so check Adobe’s current plan details for your account before subscribing.
iOS and Android differences and file switching
Adobe says some mobile capabilities differ between iOS and Android. One concrete example is page insertion: Android’s instructions include scanning a page directly into a PDF, while iOS’s listed options are another file or a blank page.
