Duck.ai is a useful starting point if you want an ad-free AI chat with clearly documented privacy controls. Claude is another ad-free option, but its consumer policy allows conversations to be used for model improvement in certain cases. ChatGPT itself is not uniformly ad-free: OpenAI says it is testing ads in the United States on Free and Go plans, while Plus and Pro are ad-free subscriptions. None of these labels alone tells you exactly who may process a conversation or how long it may be retained.
The details below reflect the providers’ published consumer terms reviewed as of October 7, 2026. Availability and plan features can vary by region and change over time, so check the linked policy pages and the service’s current settings before sharing personal information.
What “ad-free” does—and does not—tell you
Ad-free means a service does not show ads under the applicable product terms. It does not, by itself, tell you whether prompts are retained, used to improve models, reviewed by people, or sent to an underlying model provider. Those are separate privacy questions.
For a useful comparison, check the specific service, plan, region, selected model, and settings you use. In particular, look for:

- Advertising: whether ads appear on your plan and where the plan is available.
- Model improvement: whether chats may be used to train or improve models, and how to opt out.
- Retention and deletion: how long prompts, responses, feedback, and uploaded files may be kept, including exceptions.
- Access: whether providers, authorized staff, or service providers may process conversations for safety, support, legal, or other purposes.
- History and account controls: whether chats are saved to your account, whether history can sync, and what temporary or incognito modes actually change.
- Underlying models: whether a chat interface sends prompts to another company’s model and what terms apply to that processing.
Duck.ai: a strong first look for privacy controls
DuckDuckGo says Duck.ai does not record or store chats by default and that neither DuckDuckGo nor the underlying providers use those chats to train chat models. It also says identifying metadata, such as IP addresses, is removed before prompts are sent to model providers. DuckDuckGo’s agreements with providers call for zero data retention and no model training. These are the company’s stated safeguards, not a promise that no processing or temporary retention can ever occur. See DuckDuckGo’s Duck.ai privacy documentation.
Important exceptions and controls
- DuckDuckGo says some OpenAI and Anthropic chats may be held in short-term memory for up to one hour for prompt caching.
- Anthropic may retain chats when required by law or to combat malicious use.
- Uploaded images and files are subject to separate CSAM scanning. DuckDuckGo says flagged material may be retained and reported.
- Optional chat-history syncing stores chats in an end-to-end encrypted format that DuckDuckGo says it cannot read.
- Feedback you explicitly share is handled separately and may be stored or reviewed.
Duck.ai is a multi-provider interface, so the model and provider involved can vary. Check the options shown in the current interface rather than relying on an old model lineup.

Claude: ad-free, with separate model-improvement choices
Anthropic states that “Claude remains ad-free.” For consumer accounts, Anthropic says conversations may be used for model improvement if you allow it, if a conversation is flagged for safety review, or if you otherwise explicitly opt in. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if Model Improvement is enabled in Privacy Settings. These terms concern consumer Claude; they should not be assumed to describe commercial or API arrangements. Read Anthropic’s model-training FAQ and its Privacy Policy update.
Retention tied to improvement and feedback
Anthropic says opted-in model-improvement data is retained for up to five years. It also says submitting thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback can cause the full related conversation to be stored for up to five years. These periods apply to those specific cases; they are not a general retention period for every Claude conversation.

Anthropic advises users to take care with highly sensitive information. Its guidance on who may view conversations is available in the Claude Help Center.
ChatGPT: ads depend on plan and region
OpenAI says it is testing ads in the United States for ChatGPT Free and Go plans. Plus and Pro are described as ad-free subscriptions. OpenAI also describes a free no-ads option with additional limits; availability may vary by region and over time. Check the current Ads in ChatGPT FAQ for the option available to you.

OpenAI says advertisers do not receive chats, chat history, memories, name, email, precise location, IP address, or sensitive information. Ad targeting may use the current chat context and, when personalized ads are enabled, past chats and memory. These advertising statements do not replace the separate controls for chat history or model improvement. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Privacy Settings page describes those controls.
Model improvement and Temporary Chats
OpenAI says consumers can manage model-improvement preferences under Settings > Data controls. Temporary Chats are not used to improve OpenAI models while they remain temporary. They stay out of chat history and do not create or update memories, but OpenAI says they may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. A limited number of authorized OpenAI staff and service providers may access content for stated safety, support, legal, or model-improvement purposes. Details are in OpenAI’s consumer data FAQ.

How to choose for a private conversation
- If minimizing default storage is your priority, start with Duck.ai’s current privacy terms. Review the exceptions above and verify which model/provider is selected for a chat.
- If you prefer Claude, review Privacy Settings before chatting. Decide whether to allow Model Improvement, and use Incognito mode when you do not want those chats used for improvement.
- If you stay with ChatGPT, check your plan and controls. Confirm whether ads apply in your region, review Settings > Data controls, and use Temporary Chat only with its 30-day safety-retention qualification in mind.
- Keep sensitive material out unless you have verified the exact terms you need. Do not submit passwords, financial account details, medical records, or confidential documents to a consumer chatbot unless you have independently established that its service and plan are appropriate.
No single “most private” ranking captures these differences: providers describe different defaults, exceptions, review processes, and model arrangements. A VPN does not prevent a chatbot provider from receiving text you submit, so it is not a substitute for checking the service’s data practices.
