Chronic pain lasts longer than three months or beyond the time expected for healing. Duration is a useful distinction, but it does not identify the cause or determine by itself what care you need.
How acute and chronic pain differ
Pain is personal: the same condition can feel different from one person to another. The patterns below can help describe pain, but they are not a way to diagnose its cause.

The three-month threshold is a common description, not a diagnostic test. In its 2022 opioid-prescribing guideline, the CDC defines acute pain as lasting less than one month for that guideline’s prescribing context. Definitions therefore vary with context.
What pain can feel like
Pain may be sharp, dull, burning, aching, tingling, shooting, or throbbing. It can be constant or come and go. No particular sensation proves that pain is acute or chronic; duration and the circumstances around it are more useful context for a clinician.

Chronic pain can affect more than the painful area. Some people experience disrupted sleep, low energy, changes in mood, or difficulty with work and relationships. These effects are not universal, and they do not mean the pain is imaginary. NIH describes chronic pain as involving changes in how the nervous system processes pain, as well as physical, mental, and social factors. Acute and chronic pain can also occur at the same time.
When to seek medical care
Get medical help right away if pain is accompanied by any of these warning signs, as advised by NIH:

- Severe pain that does not improve with usual medicines, or pain that is rapidly worsening.
- Pain after a fall or injury.
- Trouble urinating or loss of bladder or bowel control.
- Fever.
- Unintended weight loss.
Do not try to determine the cause of a warning sign on your own. Arrange an assessment with a healthcare professional for pain that persists, interferes with daily life, or has no clear cause. Identifying the cause can help guide care.
How to prepare to describe pain to a clinician
A short written record can make it easier to explain what has changed and when. NIH recommends a pain diary for tracking triggers and symptoms; the National Institute on Aging also suggests noting details about pain before speaking with a doctor or nurse.

- Where the pain is and when it began.
- Whether it is constant or comes and goes, and what it feels like.
- When it occurs, and what seems to worsen or ease it.
- Other symptoms you have noticed.
- Medicines and non-medicine therapies you have tried.
How treatment is chosen
Treatment depends on the cause and type of pain. MedlinePlus lists options that may include medicines, physical therapy, acupuncture, and sometimes surgery; lifestyle changes may also be relevant depending on symptoms and cause. A clinician can help determine which approaches fit your situation. A pain diary can support that conversation, but it does not diagnose or treat pain.
