Aave’s October 2, 2026 governance proposal would raise GHO borrowing rates on Ethereum Core and Prime by 0.25 percentage points. TokenLogic says the move is intended to encourage repayment and help replenish GHO Stability Module reserves, but it remains a proposal in the available record—not a confirmed, completed rate change.
What GHO rate increases did Aave propose?
TokenLogic’s October 2, 2026 proposal calls for the GHO Risk Council to raise rates on both Ethereum markets. It changes different parameters on Core and Prime:

Prime’s actual borrowing rate varies with utilization. At the 86% utilization cited in the proposal, TokenLogic estimated it would rise from about 3.92% to about 4.17%. That estimate applies to the stated utilization, not every borrower or utilization level. The proposed Core rate would match the 4.50% Aave Savings Rate cited in the post. TokenLogic also reported USDC and USDT borrowing costs of 4.39% at that time.
The proposal names the GHO Risk Council as executor. It says the council would call updateGhoBorrowRate through the Core and Prime GhoAaveSteward contracts.

Why is Aave raising GHO borrowing rates?
TokenLogic’s proposal describes pressure on GHO’s peg and on the stablecoin reserves available through its Stability Modules. It says GHO traded below $0.999 for most of September 2026 and closed October 1 near $0.9993. The post also reports that the USDC GSM was depleted while the USDT GSM held approximately 22.5 million USDT. The rate change follows earlier increases. In an August 27, 2026 update, TokenLogic described Core moving from 3.75% to 4.25% in two 0.25-percentage-point steps, while Prime’s base rate rose from 2.00% to 2.75% in two steps. That update linked the earlier moves to GHO being cheaper to obtain than comparable stablecoins, which it associated with selling pressure and outflows from GSM backing. What does the GHO rate increase mean for borrowers?
If the proposed parameters are implemented, GHO borrowing would cost more on both markets. The practical effect depends on which market a borrower uses and, for Prime, the market’s utilization-dependent rate. Core’s proposed APR moves up by 0.25 percentage points; Prime’s base rate also rises by that amount, while the proposal’s estimate of Prime’s resulting borrow rate assumes 86% utilization.
TokenLogic’s reasoning is that some borrowers may repay when borrowing becomes more expensive. A borrower who still needs GHO might instead buy it on a secondary market or mint it through a GSM using USDC or USDT. The proposal says GSM minting has no mint fee. These are possible responses, not guaranteed outcomes: the proposal does not establish how many borrowers would repay, buy GHO, or mint through a module.

Why is the GHO USDC Stability Module depleted?
Aave describes the GHO Stability Module (GSM) as a contract-based facility for swapping GHO with stablecoins accepted by Aave governance. Each pairing has a GSM or GSM4626 contract that provides an entry point for buying and selling; settings can include pricing and fee strategies and an exposure cap. Aave documentation also describes freezes on conversions under specified oracle conditions. The design supports the peg, but does not guarantee that GHO will always trade at one dollar. Aave’s GHO documentation and GSM documentation describe these mechanisms.
TokenLogic’s October proposal reports the USDC module depleted and the USDT module holding approximately 22.5 million USDT. It does not, in the material available here, establish a complete transaction-by-transaction cause for the depletion. The proposal’s explanation is that GHO selling and GSM redemptions had reduced backing reserves; its proposed remedy is to make borrowing less attractive and potentially encourage GSM minting, which would bring stablecoins into the modules.

GHO can also be minted by borrowing against eligible collateral in Aave V3 on Ethereum. Aave documentation explains that issuance is constrained by facilitator capacity and collateral requirements, rather than the ordinary reserve-liquidity model used for supplier-funded assets. That is the proposal’s intended outcome, not a demonstrated result. If higher costs prompt borrowers to repay, secondary-market buying could add demand for GHO. If users mint through GSMs with USDC or USDT, those modules could receive more stablecoin reserves. TokenLogic also expects continued sGHO deposits through the Aave App to offset some decline in borrowed GHO.

Whether the intervention works depends on actual market behavior and module activity. TokenLogic says the council would monitor GHO’s peg, GSM reserves, sGHO deposits, and GHO debt on both markets after implementation. Those measures provide a way to assess the proposal’s effects; the proposal itself does not report results.
Did Aave’s October 2026 GHO rate increase take effect?
The October 2 TokenLogic post is phrased as a proposal and describes a future execution plan. The available record does not confirm an on-chain execution transaction, so the proposed rates should not be presented as completed changes or as current rates. Aave’s governance materials describe Stewards as delegated managers of protocol parameters operating within governance-approved limits, including GHO borrow rates and GSM settings; this proposal specifically assigns execution to the GHO Risk Council.
