To report a VPN problem effectively, describe what you were trying to do, the last step that worked, and the first step that failed. Add when it happened, your app and device details, the exact error, and whether you can reproduce it. Submit the report through your VPN provider’s official support route, and attach diagnostic logs only after checking what they may contain and how the provider handles them.
What to include in a VPN bug report
Support can do more with a short timeline than with “the VPN won’t connect.” Make clear what you expected to happen, what actually happened, and where the sequence broke. Proton’s issue-report form asks users what they were trying to do and what went wrong; OpenVPN likewise recommends providing an explanation alongside logs. Proton’s reporting instructions and OpenVPN Support describe their respective processes.
- Last successful step: Name the last action or connection state that worked—for example, signing in, selecting a server, or establishing a tunnel.
- First failure: Say what you did next, what you expected, and what occurred instead. Include the exact error text or code, if shown.
- Time: Give the date, approximate time, and time zone. Say whether the issue is still happening or occurs intermittently.
- Setup: Include the VPN app and version, device type, and operating-system version when available. Mention the connection type if it may matter.
- Connection details: If visible, name the selected server or location and protocol. State whether the VPN appeared disconnected, was attempting to connect, or showed as connected when the problem occurred.
- Repeatability and recent changes: Explain whether the same steps fail every time, and note relevant recent app, operating-system, network, account, or configuration changes. List troubleshooting steps you have already tried.
These details help support distinguish a sign-in or authentication problem from a tunnel that will not establish, or a service that remains inaccessible after connection. They also give administrators useful context when correlating a report with technical records. AWS Client VPN documentation, for example, describes connection records that can include timestamps, protocol, status, failure reason, and device-related information: AWS Client VPN connection logs.
Use the official reporting path for your VPN
Reporting controls differ by provider, app, and platform. Follow the instructions for the product you actually use rather than assuming that one provider’s menu or log-export procedure applies everywhere.

Proton VPN
Proton’s support article directs users to the in-app “Report an issue” route and describes fields for what they were trying to do and what went wrong, plus an optional “Send error logs” choice. Its instructions cover Windows, macOS, Android, iOS/iPadOS, and Linux. Proton says its VPN error logs provide high-level technical data and do not provide browsing history; that description is specific to Proton’s logs. See Proton VPN’s issue-reporting instructions.
Mozilla VPN
Mozilla’s instructions, last updated July 15, 2025, explain how to open Help → View Log and attach the generated text file to its Contact Support Form. Mozilla describes these as records of activity within the VPN software, not browsing activity. Use the current Mozilla instructions for its product: Send error reports for Mozilla VPN.
AWS Client VPN end-user client
AWS documents a “Send Diagnostic Logs” workflow for its Windows, macOS, and Ubuntu client. The user agrees to let support access the submitted diagnostics and receives a reference number to provide to AWS Support. Keep that number with your case. See AWS Client VPN diagnostic logs.

Decide whether to attach logs
Logs can provide technical evidence, but their contents depend on the product and configuration. A provider’s statement about its own logs should not be treated as a guarantee about every VPN. Before sending a log, check the provider’s current instructions, consent wording, and description of the data collected. Submit it through the official support channel rather than an unrelated public forum.

Diagnostic records can include identifiers or network metadata. AWS says Client VPN connection logs may include public and client IP addresses, connection IDs, device type, and, with some authentication configurations, a username. AWS also notes that failed mutual-authentication attempts are not logged, so the absence of a corresponding event does not prove that no attempt occurred. Details are in AWS’s connection-log documentation.
Use this report template
Copy this template into the provider’s report form and replace the brackets with your details. Leave out anything you cannot verify.

When you may need an administrator
A user can usually report what happened on their device, but may not have access to server configuration or server-side records. For managed VPNs, ask the workplace or network administrator to check the relevant server-side evidence if the issue cannot be explained from the client report. OpenVPN Support recommends providing client logs and server logs with an explanation when a connectivity issue remains unresolved; what you can access depends on your role and setup. Describe the stage where the problem occurs—authentication, tunnel establishment, or access after connection—so the provider or administrator can focus on the system and records most likely to help. If support returns a case or diagnostic reference number, include it in follow-up messages.
