A coronal mass ejection (CME) observed on October 6 could reach Earth around October 9, according to several NASA Community Coordinated Modeling Center (CCMC) research-model runs. The estimates differ, and they do not confirm an arrival, a geomagnetic storm, or a visible aurora at any particular location. For the latest public outlook, check NOAA’s short-range aurora forecast as the date approaches.
What was observed?
NASA’s CCMC Earth CME Scoreboard records a full-halo CME first seen on October 6, 2026. The event is associated with solar active region 14549 and an M1.4 flare that peaked at 06:10 UTC. The scoreboard describes the CME in SOHO LASCO and GOES CCOR-1 imagery; STEREO A imagery first showed it toward the northeast. NASA CCMC Earth CME Scoreboard
When could the CME reach Earth?
Several CCMC model runs put a possible arrival around October 9, but they do not agree on the expected geomagnetic response. The estimates are model predictions, not observed conditions or a settled operational forecast.
| Estimated arrival | Predicted Kp range | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Around October 9 | Kp 3.0–4.0 | One range among the CCMC research-model runs |
| Around October 9 | Kp 4.0–6.0 | A different range among the CCMC research-model runs |
| Around October 9 | Kp 5.0–6.0 | A further range among the CCMC research-model runs |
The scoreboard presents multiple runs rather than one definitive arrival time and Kp outcome. It identifies itself as research information and directs the general public to NOAA for official forecasts. NASA CCMC Earth CME Scoreboard

Does the arrival mean brighter northern lights?
No. Even if the CME reaches Earth, its arrival alone does not establish that it will produce a strong geomagnetic storm or an aurora visible from your location. The differing Kp ranges in the model runs underline that the expected response is uncertain; visibility also depends on whether the aurora extends far enough toward your area and whether local skies are dark and clear.
The NOAA 27-day outlook most recently available on October 7 was issued October 5, before this CME was observed. It forecast active conditions for October 6 and unsettled conditions for October 7, attributing those expectations to recurrent coronal-hole high-speed streams. That earlier outlook does not establish whether this new CME will arrive or intensify auroras later in the week. NOAA 27-Day Outlook

Where can I check the near-term aurora forecast?
Use NOAA’s 30-minute Aurora Forecast for a short-range estimate of aurora location and intensity. NOAA’s OVATION product uses solar-wind speed and interplanetary magnetic-field measurements from the L1 point, about 1.6 million km (1 million miles) upstream from Earth. Because it relies on incoming solar-wind data, it is a near-term forecast rather than a days-ahead prediction of where a CME will arrive. If those inputs are unavailable or contaminated, an alternative Kp-driven estimate may provide no lead time. NOAA Aurora Dashboard
Check again closer to the possible October 9 arrival: the October 5 long-range bulletin predates the eruption, while the short-range product is intended to track near-term conditions. NOAA notes that aurora is not visible in daylight and can often be seen after sunset or before sunrise. Whether you can see it also depends on darkness, weather, and your location.
