A dependable release pipeline must preserve version numbers across regenerated native projects, distinguish release blockers from warnings, and verify the files that will actually ship. In a 1 September 2026 article, Indie Core Dev describes applying those lessons to a word-block puzzle game built with Capacitor—and sharing the release automation across projects.
Keep durable release data out of generated folders
The author does not commit Capacitor’s android/ directory. Instead, each game regenerates its Android project from Capacitor scaffolding and applies shared templates for Gradle, the manifest, signing, and other native settings. This avoids maintaining separate generated Gradle projects that can drift apart.
That approach has a versioning hazard: regeneration can reset values stored only in generated files. The author recounts that the game was at build 9 when regenerating android/ reset its native versionCode to 1. The durable value now lives in package.json as buildNumber; the release script mirrors it into Gradle and Xcode. In the author’s account, Google Play requires a version code higher than the last accepted upload, so a reset can put an update at risk. Make checks reflect release risk
A release check should stop the build when the defect would be embedded in the artifact being shipped and is difficult to correct after release. The author blocks on a placeholder google-services.json or one configured for the wrong package name.

Other findings may be warnings when they do not affect the current release. In the author’s example, missing ad units for a platform not shipping today and browser-only web configuration do not block a mobile release. The distinction matters: the author found that blocking on every issue encouraged routine use of --force, which weakened confidence in the checks that remained.
Inspect the synced and packaged artifact
Source files and a successful build command do not, by themselves, prove that the right content is in the release package. The author’s script injects a build-mode stamp into the HTML, then reads the stamp from the HTML synced into Android assets. It aborts if that shipped copy says dev, rather than trusting the version still sitting in dist/.

It also checks the completed Android App Bundle (AAB) signature with keytool -printcert -jarfile. That verifies the bundle itself instead of assuming that Gradle used the intended signing properties.
Use size as a budget signal, not an automatic failure
The author’s project example reports a 9.4 MB AAB and an estimated 5.9 MB download for an xxhdpi phone, measured against a 7 MB soft budget. These are project-specific figures, not general app-size benchmarks. The script warns if the budget is exceeded rather than failing the build, keeping size visible without treating the chosen threshold as a release-critical defect.
Share the release command and its fixes
The author describes npx game-release --patch as the shared release command. It updates mirrored version values, builds the web bundle with native release flags, syncs it, checks the build stamp, builds and collects the bundle, checks its signature, and reports sizes.
Sharing this automation across sibling games means a fix learned on one project can reach the others. As the author puts it: “Every check here was learned the expensive way on one game and is worth exactly as much to the next. A copy of the script per game is a copy that gets one of those fixes and not the others.”

Keep development builds independent of release secrets
Signing properties are read from outside the repository. A guard allows a new game to build a debug APK before release credentials or a release keystore exist; a release build without its signing properties fails clearly. This keeps secrets out of version control without making them a prerequisite for ordinary development builds.
