When you ask, “How do I name this?”, start by deciding what the thing means—not by reaching for a casing rule. Choose a name that is accurate, clear to the people who will read the code, specific enough to distinguish nearby concepts, and consistent with the project’s conventions. If those goals conflict, accuracy and clarity matter more than brevity.

How to work out what a name needs to say

Think of naming as three decisions: identify the concept, choose words that represent it, then arrange those words in the form your language and project expect. This separates the question of meaning from the question of style. A name can use the right capitalization and still describe the wrong thing.

  1. Identify the concept. What value, action, type, or shared domain idea does this identifier represent?
  2. Choose the words. Use terms that convey its meaning to the intended readers, ideally matching vocabulary already used in the product and team.
  3. Construct the name. Apply the casing, separators, prefixes, and other forms required by the language and repository.

This sequence reflects a framework for name selection described in a research paper: choosing concepts, choosing representative words, and constructing a name from those words. Read the paper on naming things.

How to choose between candidate names

Compare plausible options against meaning first, then readability and local fit. Norton’s engineering guide puts the priorities plainly: “Names should be accurate first.” It also advises preferring the least ambiguous accurate option. Norton Digital Product Guidebook.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Accuracy: Does the name describe what the code actually represents or does? Avoid a short label that suggests behavior the code does not have.
  • Clarity: Can a teammate understand the identifier without guessing or looking up an unexplained abbreviation?
  • Useful specificity: Does the name distinguish this concept from nearby ones without baking in a temporary implementation detail?
  • Domain vocabulary: Does it use the same term people use in product discussions, tickets, and documentation? If those sources disagree, settle the terminology with the team.
  • Convention fit: Does its form match the language and repository’s style?
  • Brevity: Can a word be removed without making the meaning less clear?

For example, if a function transfers a file between two locations, parameters called source and destination communicate their roles better than a and b. By contrast, names such as ProductInfo and ProductData may look different while failing to explain what actually distinguishes the concepts. The useful test is not whether two names differ, but whether the difference carries meaning. These examples follow the naming discussion in Clean Code. Clean Code, publisher page.

What to do when the name is hard to find

Difficulty naming something can be a useful signal, though it is not proof of a design problem. Revisit the concept before cycling through synonyms: perhaps it is vague, one identifier is carrying multiple meanings, or a function combines responsibilities that deserve separate names. Also check whether the apparent naming problem is really a vocabulary disagreement. An accurate, distinct name depends on knowing what the thing is.

Do not solve uncertainty by encoding incidental implementation details. A name tied to a storage mechanism, current UI, or temporary workflow can become misleading when the implementation changes. Prefer the stable concept the code represents, while retaining enough specificity to tell it apart from related concepts.

How naming conventions differ by language and project

Meaning is broadly portable; identifier form is not. Follow the style guide already used by the target repository rather than treating one language’s casing rule as universal. For framework and API design in particular, Microsoft’s guidance emphasizes consistent conventions and names that communicate an element’s function. Python

PEP 8 recommends lowercase function and variable names, with words separated by underscores when that improves readability. If a name conflicts with a reserved keyword, its guidance is to add a trailing underscore rather than abbreviating or corrupting the spelling. PEP 8: Function and Variable Names.

JavaScript

Conventions can vary even within a language. Google’s JavaScript style guide, for example, derives module import names from file names, uses lowerCamelCase for module namespace imports, and generally preserves the original names of named imports. These are Google’s project-specific rules, not a universal standard for every JavaScript codebase. Google JavaScript Style Guide: Naming.

Should you spell out abbreviations?

Spell out a word when readers would have to decode an abbreviation or when different readers could interpret it differently. Norton’s engineering guidance recommends spelling out the whole word for that reason. This is a useful default, not a ban on familiar, domain-standard abbreviations: a recognized term can be clearer than an unfamiliar expansion. Judge it by the readers and vocabulary of the codebase.

What the evidence says about readable identifiers

A 2017 paper, Naming Guidelines for Professional Programmers, describes a prior study involving over 100 programmers. In that study, full-word identifiers improved comprehension descriptions and confidence compared with single-letter identifiers; the paper also reports cases where words and abbreviations made no difference. The result supports avoiding opaque one-letter names when meaning matters, but it does not establish that spelling out every identifier always improves comprehension. 2017 PPIG paper: Naming Guidelines for Professional Programmers.

A quick naming checklist

  • Can you state the concept or responsibility in one sentence?
  • Does the name describe actual meaning or behavior, rather than an assumption about implementation?
  • Will the intended reader understand its words without decoding them?
  • Does it distinguish the identifier from related concepts in a meaningful way?
  • Does it use the team’s shared domain vocabulary?
  • Does its casing and form follow the project’s style guide?
  • Can you remove any word without losing useful meaning?
