IRAS 18293-0941 is a strong candidate for a newly proposed kind of Galactic object called a microblazar: a compact binary system whose jet appears to point close to Earth. “Firing line” describes that orientation, not a danger to the planet. The classification is not confirmed, and one expected signal—rapid variability—has not been observed.

What is a microblazar?

A blazar is an active galactic nucleus—a galaxy’s central region powered by a supermassive black hole—with a relativistic jet aimed close to our line of sight. A microblazar is the proposed smaller, Milky Way counterpart: a stellar-mass compact object in an X-ray binary producing a jet aligned toward an observer. In this case, the object is a candidate, not an established new class or confirmed first.

The phrase “in the firing line” is a vivid way to describe a jet’s orientation. The available reporting does not describe IRAS 18293-0941 as threatening Earth.

What is IRAS 18293-0941?

Live Science reports that IRAS 18293-0941 is about 12,000 light-years away in the Milky Way, obscured by dust, and consists of a black hole and a hot, massive star in an orbit of approximately 11 days. Material drawn from the star is believed to feed the black hole, while jets are expelled in opposite directions; one appears oriented toward Earth. These distance and orbit figures are reported by Live Science.

What evidence supports the candidate classification?

The study combines observations across multiple wavelengths with theoretical analysis. Its abstract reports photometric and spectroscopic properties typical of a binary star, along with clear, collimated, one-sided radio emission consistent with relativistic motion at a reduced ejection angle. Those observations support the idea that a jet is directed close to our line of sight; they do not by themselves settle the classification.

The work drew on observations from the Calar Alto Astronomical Observatory, the European VLBI Network and MeerKAT, as well as archival Very Large Array data, according to Live Science. These are professional observatories and archival data, not observations that the report suggests readers can reproduce with consumer telescopes.

What does not yet fit the picture?

Rapid variability is expected for a microblazar, but the study did not observe it. The authors suggest that a dense circumstellar envelope might smooth or obscure the signal. That is a possible explanation, not a directly demonstrated resolution of the missing variability.

The paper also models a possible association between the system and nearby ultra-high-energy source LHAASO J1831-1007u*. This is a proposed connection, not proof that IRAS 18293-0941 produces the particles responsible for that source. Live Science reports that the team is still investigating whether the region behind the system is actually the proposed hotspot.

How certain is the discovery?

The authors describe IRAS 18293-0941 as a serious candidate. Study first author Josep Martí told Live Science, “It is the first time that we have a serious candidate.” The distinction matters: the radio structure is observed, but identifying the system as a microblazar, explaining the absent fast variability, and linking it to the ultra-high-energy source all involve interpretation.

The paper, “A Galactic microblazar as a potential accelerator of ultra-high-energy particles,” by Martí and coauthors, was listed as forthcoming by Astronomy & Astrophysics. The journal record states it was received May 25, 2026, and accepted August 30, 2026. Its abstract is also available on arXiv.
