No: satellites are not expected to make the stars disappear. But growing satellite constellations can leave bright trails in telescope images, interfere with radio astronomy, and alter the experience of a dark sky. The title’s “a million satellites” is a possible-sounding scenario, not a verified count or forecast established by the sources cited here.

Is a million satellites a confirmed forecast?

No. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) material cited here does not establish either a current global satellite count or a verified forecast of one million. Treat that number as a hypothetical scenario, not a settled prediction. The more useful question is how proposed large constellations could affect observations and what people see from the ground.

The IAU’s 2024 working-group report modeled a conditional scenario in which several of the largest proposed constellation projects are completed. In that case, it estimated that more than 5,000 satellites could be above the local horizon at a typical dark-sky observatory at 30 degrees north or south. This is a model for a particular location and assumed future constellation build-out—not the number currently in orbit or visible at once.

Will satellites make it impossible to see stars?

No. Satellites do not extinguish starlight, and the sources do not predict that the night sky will become starless. The concern is that artificial objects can intrude on particular observations and, under some conditions, become visible to people watching the sky.

Visibility varies with latitude, time, season, satellite orbit and geometry, and whether a satellite is illuminated by the Sun while the observer’s location is dark. The IAU report says satellites in its modeled scenario may be visible to the unaided eye, especially near the horizon and during twilight. That is not a claim that every person will see hundreds at any time; conditions matter.

Satellite reflections are also not the same issue as terrestrial light pollution. In a 2025 article, the IAU described a historic benchmark for an adequate professional observing site: artificial light should contribute no more than 10% above the natural background at an elevation of 45 degrees in any azimuthal direction. That benchmark concerns ground-based artificial lighting, not a satellite-specific limit.

How do satellite constellations affect astronomy?

There are two distinct pathways: reflected sunlight can affect optical and infrared observations, while radio emissions can interfere with radio telescopes. The IAU’s 2024 resolution describes the “rapid proliferation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and beyond” as having “negative effects on astronomical observations, scientific research, and the night sky.”

Optical and infrared telescopes: trails in images

A satellite reflecting sunlight can cross a telescope’s field of view during an exposure and leave a streak. Whether that affects a particular observation depends on the satellite’s brightness, the observing time, exposure length, and how much sky the instrument captures at once. Wide-field surveys are especially exposed because they image broad areas, but a narrow-field observation is not automatically immune.

A streak can complicate or contaminate an image; it does not mean that all images are ruined or that every telescope sees the same impact. The IAU notes that the effects concern both ground-based observations and space-based telescopes.

Radio telescopes: interference from transmissions and emissions

Radio astronomy faces a separate problem. Satellite transmissions in or near radio-astronomy bands—and unintended electromagnetic emissions—can interfere with observatory measurements. This is radio-frequency interference, not a visible trail in an optical image. The IAU’s recommendations address both optical and radio astronomy because the causes and mitigation needs differ.

Amateur astronomy and the public view

Satellite passes can interrupt a visual observing session or appear in astrophotography, and the changing sky matters to amateur astronomers as well as research observatories. The IAU identifies both scientific observing and the human experience of the night sky as concerns. How noticeable a pass is depends on local conditions; modeled visibility should not be mistaken for a guarantee of a particular number of sightings.

What is at stake—and what satellite services provide

Large constellations can support global communications and Earth observation. Those services have societal value, while bright reflections, radio interference, and changes to the visible sky impose costs on research and the cultural experience of dark skies. The IAU recognizes both the benefits and the negative effects; the issue is how to provide useful services while reducing harm to astronomy and the night sky.

There is no single universal impact number that ranks every constellation or telescope. The effects vary by wavelength, instrument, orbit, observing conditions, and location: a satellite trail in a wide-field image is not directly comparable to radio interference or a visible pass at twilight.

Can the effects be reduced?

Yes, some effects can be managed, but the IAU materials do not establish that any one measure eliminates them. Its Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky (CPS) recommendations call for collaboration among satellite operators, astronomers, and other relevant stakeholders, covering both optical and radio astronomy.

  • Reduce optical brightness: design measures can make satellites less reflective and reduce their impact on observations and the visible sky.
  • Limit radio interference: coordination and attention to both intended transmissions and unintended emissions can help address radio-astronomy concerns.
  • Continue research and design work: the IAU calls for research and satellite designs and materials that reduce impacts.
  • Coordinate internationally: the IAU reported in 2025 that satellite impacts were discussed in the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space context, with recommendations to advance research and impact-reducing designs. Discussion at the UN is not, by itself, binding global regulation.

These steps are ways to reduce or manage interference, not proof that the effects vanish. Their practical success depends on implementation and coordination.

What this means if you want to watch the sky

You can still observe stars and planets; satellite activity does not make amateur observing pointless. Expect that an occasional pass may cross your view or appear in a photograph, with the chance of seeing satellites varying by time and location. The larger policy question is how to keep the benefits of satellite services while protecting observations and access to dark skies.
