“A Key Change for Mobile Phones” appears to refer to Fastap, a physical keypad design that placed raised letter keys between a phone’s number keys. The connection is likely, not confirmed: the original 2007 article is unavailable, and the available contemporary references do not establish everything it said.
What was Fastap?
Fastap was described as a mobile-phone keypad that gave letters their own raised physical keys between the numeric keys. Instead of relying only on the conventional number pad’s shared key positions for letters and numbers, the design arranged both in a single physical keypad. The description comes from a 2007 secondary post, not an independently verified technical specification.
A May 23, 2007 Technology Review page lists “A Key Change for Mobile Phones” among recommended reading and dates that item May 18, 2007. A separate May 20, 2007 post connects the title to Fastap. Taken together, these references make Fastap the likely subject of the title, but they do not verify the original article’s full argument or authorship.
How did the keypad work?
In the reported layout, numeric keys retained their positions while additional raised letter keys occupied the spaces between them. The intended distinction was physical: a user could feel separate letter and number positions rather than treating letters as secondary assignments on the number keys. The available description does not establish exact key dimensions, the complete layout, or how the handset handled every input task.

What phones were associated with Fastap?
The 2007 secondary post names the LG AX490 and LG 6190 and associates them with Alltel in the United States and Telus in Canada. It also attributes the design to David Levy, reports a patent registration in 1993, and says commercialization through digitWireless began in 2005. These are claims reported by that post; the available evidence does not independently establish the patent record, launch details, or model compatibility.
Those handset and carrier references are historical examples, not guidance about what can be bought or used today. No current Fastap-equipped phone, compatible accessory, or replacement part is established by the available sources.

Did Fastap make texting faster?
The same secondary post claims that Fastap users could send more texts and type faster, but it provides no named study, measurement method, or independently retrievable results. There is therefore no supported basis for a numerical speed or volume comparison with conventional keypads or QWERTY phones, or for concluding that the design improved texting in practice.
