Sinhala Transliterator is a Java library whose documented purpose is to convert Sinhala script into Latin characters using predefined mapping rules. Its README’s example is සිංහල → siṁhala. This is transliteration, not translation: as author Irosh Perera puts it, “Transliteration represents text in another writing system. It does not translate the meaning into English.”

What Sinhala Transliterator does

The project documentation describes mappings for Sinhala vowels, consonants, and diacritics, with handling intended for special characters, digits, and punctuation. It also says unsupported characters are ignored while input integrity is preserved. These are claims in the project README; the available project and registry materials do not establish independent accuracy or performance results.

The documented example, සිංහල → siṁhala, shows that the output may use a diacritic: the Latin representation is not necessarily limited to unaccented English letters.

Transliteration is not translation

Transliteration changes the writing system used to represent text; it does not translate the text’s meaning into English. The library’s stated task is Sinhala script to Latin characters.

That direction matters. Converting informal Latin-script Sinhala—often called Singlish or Romanized Sinhala—back into Sinhala script is a different problem. Research on that reverse direction discusses ambiguity and compares approaches, but it does not evaluate this library or show that the library supports reverse conversion. The 2024 study concerns the reverse task, while the Swa-bhasha Resource Hub paper catalogs Romanized Sinhala-to-Sinhala resources; neither establishes this package’s capabilities.

How to add the library to a Java project

Check the current repository and package registry before copying a dependency into a build. The README’s Maven and Gradle snippets disagree about the group ID, and the reviewed Sonatype listing is for version 1.0.0, while the README shows version 1.1.0. The available information therefore does not establish a single, independently confirmed current coordinate.

Source Dependency information shown What to verify
Project README, Maven snippet io.github.iroshperera:sinhala-transliterator:1.1.0 Confirm that this exact coordinate and version are currently published.
Project README, Gradle snippet com.webmotech:sinhala-transliterator:1.1.0 Its group ID differs from the Maven snippet; confirm the correct artifact coordinate.
Sonatype listing reviewed io.github.iroshperera:sinhala-transliterator:1.0.0 This listing is for 1.0.0, not the README’s 1.1.0; inspect the current artifact and POM.

For Maven, the README’s example is:

<dependency>
    <groupId>io.github.iroshperera</groupId>
    <artifactId>sinhala-transliterator</artifactId>
    <version>1.1.0</version>
</dependency>

Treat this as the repository’s documented snippet, not confirmation that the artifact is available under those coordinates today. Sonatype’s POM for 1.0.0 lists Java source and target 21; that does not by itself establish the minimum Java version for the README’s 1.1.0 dependency. Check the POM for the exact version you intend to use before setting runtime compatibility.

What to check before adopting it

  • Mapping behavior: Try representative Sinhala text, including vowels, consonants, diacritics, punctuation, and digits, and inspect the output against the spelling or romanization convention your application needs.
  • Mixed and unsupported input: Test the behavior of unsupported characters and text that mixes Sinhala with Latin characters or other scripts; the README describes intended handling but does not provide independent test results.
  • Dependency and runtime: Resolve the correct group ID and version from the current registry entry, then inspect that version’s POM for Java compatibility.
  • License: The README identifies Apache License 2.0, while the reviewed Sonatype POM for 1.0.0 lists Apache 2.0 and MIT entries. Check the repository’s current LICENSE file and the exact artifact metadata before making a legal or distribution decision.
  • Project health: Review the repository’s current maintenance activity and tests for evidence relevant to your application. The materials cited here do not establish adoption, speed, or accuracy figures.

Library What the documentation establishes Fit for Sinhala-to-Latin
Sanscript.java A Java transliteration library focused on Sanskrit, with partial support for other languages; its README says Java 8 or higher and lists supported script and romanization schemes. Sinhala is not among the default Brahmic schemes shown in the reviewed README, so the evidence does not establish it as a drop-in alternative.
com.github.sanskrit-coders:indic-transliteration 1.6 Sonatype describes a Scala/Java library for character-level processing and script/encoding transliteration for Sanskrit and other Indic languages. The listing does not establish a specific Sinhala-to-Latin mapping. Confirm that capability before considering it a substitute.

For any candidate, check language and direction coverage, romanization scheme and diacritics, handling of unsupported or mixed-script text, Java compatibility, dependency coordinates, license, maintenance, and tests. The available sources do not provide a like-for-like feature or accuracy comparison.
