In a New York ride reported by WIRED on October 6, 2026, journalist Julian Chokkattu covered 36 miles on one charge, while rainy weather and urban shade limited what he could confirm about solar charging.
What the Lightfoot is—and what its numbers mean
Otherlab’s Lightfoot is a two-wheeled electric scooter without pedals. WIRED describes a bench seat, internal storage and two large solar panels, with the vehicle intended for bike-lane riding. Its listed specifications include a 20-mph top speed, dual 750-watt brushless hub motors, a 1.5-kilowatt-hour battery, dual 120-watt solar panels, a 137-pound weight and a 419-pound maximum payload. These are specifications reported by WIRED, not independent measurements.
WIRED reports a company-claimed range of 37 miles. Chokkattu, by contrast, says he rode 36 miles on a charge. That is a single reported ride, not a controlled range test; he also notes that it is difficult to separate the contributions of solar charging and regenerative braking.
How the ride felt in New York
Chokkattu reports that the scooter reached its 20-mph top speed quickly with the twist throttle and held that speed on steep New York City bridges during his ride. He found the initial delay in throttle response awkward at first and says the torque could feel strong to some riders. Regenerative braking engaged when he stopped applying throttle, and he described it as aggressive. Otherlab founder Saul Griffith told WIRED that regenerative braking can return about 15 to 20 percent of battery life; that figure is Griffith’s claim, not a measurement from Chokkattu’s ride.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Chokkattu says he rode 36 miles across Brooklyn and Manhattan, returned home without plugging in, and rode again the following morning. His account is useful evidence of what happened on that particular trip, but it does not establish a repeatable range under different rider, route, speed or weather conditions.
What the solar panels contributed
The panels’ contribution depended on exposure. Chokkattu reports no visible battery-meter gain during several rainy days. Later, after about six sunny hours parked in the same spot, the meter rose from around 50% to 60%; after another sunny day, it reached 72%. These are his observations of the meter in the conditions he encountered, not a controlled charging measurement.

Otherlab claims the panels can add up to 18 miles of range per day in good conditions. Chokkattu says he could not test that claim because he did not get those conditions. For a rider, the practical distinction is important: the panels may help when the scooter gets strong sun, but shade and rain can make that contribution negligible.
Charging, parking and security
The battery cannot be removed, WIRED reports. When sunlight is insufficient, charging from a wall outlet means bringing power to wherever the 137-pound scooter is parked; the vehicle is designed to be parked outside. This makes both secure outdoor parking and access to a reachable outlet relevant to daily use.

WIRED says the Lightfoot has no app, speed modes, turn signals, alarm or built-in GPS. Chokkattu suggests using a lock and an optional Bluetooth tracker. The article does not test or recommend a particular product, and a Bluetooth tracker is not the same as a built-in GPS system.
Fit, storage and preproduction caveats
WIRED lists a recommended rider-height range of 5 feet 2 inches to 6 feet 2 inches. Chokkattu says he is 6 feet 4 inches and 220 pounds and completed the reported ride, but one rider’s experience outside the listed height range is not a fit recommendation. The listed maximum payload is 419 pounds.

He liked the suspension, low center of gravity and internal storage. He also found the kickstand awkward to reach and noticed seams around the panels and seat that could let water into the storage area. WIRED described the reviewed scooter as preproduction, so those fit-and-finish observations should not automatically be taken as representative of a production unit.
Griffith told WIRED that the scooter uses common off-the-shelf components and that local bike shops could make repairs more accessible after removing the panels. That is an expectation attributed to Griffith, not a demonstrated serviceability test.

Who the Lightfoot may suit
- Potentially a better match: Someone who can park outdoors in good sun, has a practical way to charge from an outlet when needed, and values storage and an upright, pedal-free scooter design.
- Think carefully if: Your parking spot is usually shaded or rainy, there is no outlet within reach, you need integrated theft-alert or location features, or you must carry the scooter indoors or up stairs.
- Check fit in person: The published height range and the scooter’s weight are more useful starting points than assuming one reviewer’s ride predicts your comfort or handling.
There is no competing scooter evaluated in Chokkattu’s report, so it does not establish that Lightfoot is better or worse than a particular alternative.
Reported availability and price
WIRED’s October 6, 2026 report says Otherlab was initially focusing sales in California and listed the scooter at $4,495, with a $100 reservation option and sky blue or solar orange color choices. Those are terms reported on that date, not a guarantee of current price or availability. The article describes expansion to other southern states, resort and campus conversations, and possible sales in countries including Vietnam as plans discussed by Griffith—not completed launches.
Griffith framed the project around the idea that solar could make a meaningful contribution to a simple vehicle people would engage with. He also argued that many people do not want pedals. Those are the inventor’s views; the ride report’s concrete evidence is narrower: a 36-mile ride, variable solar-meter readings, and practical tradeoffs around weather, charging and parking.
