You cannot assume performance measurement has zero cost. Profilers and traces use resources the game also needs, so the practical goal is to collect the least data that answers your question, then measure the collector’s impact on the target hardware. Start with frame timings and a few focused code markers; turn on deeper tracing only to investigate a repeatable hitch or bottleneck.
Start with a repeatable target workload
Choose a gameplay route, scene, or event that reliably reproduces the performance question. Use the device and build that matter to players, and keep the workload consistent between runs. Record the engine version, build type, device, enabled profiler modules or trace events, and capture window so that later comparisons are meaningful.
For final timing conclusions, profile the application on its intended platform. Unity notes that Editor Play mode shares resources and the main thread with the Editor; its interface, inspectors, Scene view, and asset management can affect performance and memory readings. The Editor is useful for quick iteration, but it is not a substitute for a target-device capture. Unity’s Profiler documentation explains the distinction.
Begin with the narrowest useful measurement
Use frame timings to locate the broad bottleneck
When the question is whether a frame is CPU-bound, GPU-bound, or waiting on presentation, begin with frame-level measurements rather than enabling every profiler view. Unity’s Frame Timing Manager exposes total CPU and GPU frame time, plus main-thread CPU, render-thread CPU, Present wait, and GPU timings. Unity describes this focused collection as lower overhead than its general-purpose Profiler because it gathers less information. Check API behavior and platform support for the Unity version in your project. Unity’s Frame Timing Manager overview describes these measurements.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Interpret the timings together. A long main-thread or render-thread time can point to CPU work; high GPU time can indicate rendering pressure; a long Present wait may reflect presentation or synchronization rather than expensive game logic. Similar pressure across CPU and GPU can indicate a more balanced limit. Treat these as diagnostic clues, not proof from a single frame.
Add selected markers for suspected code regions
If the broad timing points toward code execution, add named scopes around a small number of expensive or suspicious regions. Unity recommends ProfilerMarker for this purpose. Its general-purpose Profiler may not show every method call, while deep profiling adds substantial overhead and can skew results. Avoid leaving broad deep profiling enabled for routine measurements.

Unity documents that marker Begin and End calls have no execution overhead in non-development builds, but marker fields remain in release builds and consume memory. The distinction matters: zero execution overhead does not mean zero storage cost. Unity’s code instrumentation documentation describes marker usage and this qualification.
For counters that should be collected dynamically, Unity’s ProfilerRecorder can attach to profiler data in the Editor and Development Players. Its recorder can be controlled during runtime; dispose of it when collection is no longer needed, following the API example for the project’s Unity version. Unity’s ProfilerRecorder API reference covers its behavior.

Use Unreal traces selectively
In Unreal Engine, Unreal Insights records and reviews frame-by-frame traces. Epic cautions that profiling shares CPU, RAM, and disk with the game, so collection can worsen measured performance. Start with the trace data that addresses the question instead of recording every available event. The current Unreal Engine 5.8 profiling guidance makes the resource trade-off explicit: Epic’s profiling introduction.
For custom CPU instrumentation, Epic recommends built-in event types before custom ones and provides the TRACE_CPUPROFILER_EVENT_SCOPE_ macro family for scoped work. Prefer static labels over dynamic strings to reduce performance and memory overhead. Use counters for values changing over time, and reserve bookmarks for infrequent game-state changes; higher-frequency changes are better represented by timers or counters. Epic’s trace infrastructure documentation details these options.

Investigate slow frames with a deeper capture
If a repeatable hitch remains unexplained, temporarily collect a more detailed trace and inspect the slow frame or time interval. In Unity, use targeted Profiler modules, markers, and counters; enable deeper profiling only when the additional call-level detail is needed. In Unreal Insights, use frame and timing views with built-in timers and counters to identify where time was spent. A deep capture is an investigation tool, not the baseline against which to judge normal gameplay performance.
Epic’s Unreal Engine 4.27 Unreal Insights overview recommends running the analysis tool on a separate machine to minimize its impact. That is version-specific advice, so verify the recommended workflow for the engine release in use. Unreal Insights supports recording and separate analysis; the overview describes its frame, timing, timer, and counter views: Unreal Insights overview (Unreal Engine 4.27).

Compare frames, not just average FPS
Average FPS can conceal occasional long frames. Compare frame-time behavior across the same workload and pay attention to slow-frame events as well as the typical frame. For each capture, distinguish the dimensions the engine exposes:
- Main-thread CPU time
- Render-thread CPU time
- GPU time
- Present or synchronization waiting
- Frame-time distribution and unusually slow frames
This makes it easier to tell whether a change improved actual work or merely shifted waiting between parts of the frame. Do not compare captures made with different workloads, devices, build types, or collection settings as if they were equivalent.
Measure the profiler’s cost in your own project
- Run the chosen workload on the target device with the intended build and the profiler detached or using the lightest available timing collection. Save the baseline.
- Repeat the workload with only the selected counters, modules, or markers enabled. Keep the device, build, route, and capture window the same.
- Compare frame timings and slow-frame behavior between runs. The difference is an estimate of collection impact under those conditions, not a universal profiler-overhead percentage.
- If a hitch requires a broad or deep trace, capture it temporarily, inspect the relevant interval, then reduce or turn off collection.
- After making a performance change, rerun the same target-device workload and validate it with the profiler detached or with the lightest relevant instrumentation.
Store the configuration alongside the result: engine version, build type, device, enabled events or modules, and workload. That context is essential when deciding whether a measured change came from the game or from different collection conditions.
