Hyperjacking is malicious control or subversion of a computer’s hypervisor—the software layer that mediates physical hardware and keeps virtual machines (VMs) isolated from one another. If an attacker gains control at that layer, the impact can extend beyond one infected guest. Hyperjacking is not the same as an ordinary guest infection, and a VM escape is one possible route across the virtualization boundary, not a synonym for hyperjacking.

What is hyperjacking?

A hypervisor virtualizes a physical computer’s resources so multiple operating systems and their applications can run in separate VMs. It mediates access to resources such as memory, processors, storage, and devices, and is responsible for runtime isolation among the VMs on its host. NIST describes these functions in its SP 800-125A Rev. 1.

Hyperjacking describes malicious control or subversion of this privileged layer. The term is sometimes used loosely, so it helps to distinguish it from related events:

  • Guest infection: Malware runs inside a VM’s operating system. By itself, that does not mean the attacker controls the hypervisor or can cross into other VMs.
  • VM escape: A compromised or rogue VM breaches isolation and reaches the hypervisor or resources belonging to another VM. NIST identifies isolation breaches, including VM escape, as a major threat; vulnerabilities in hypervisor design or malicious or vulnerable device drivers can contribute.
  • Hyperjacking: The hypervisor layer itself is maliciously controlled or subverted. A VM escape could be one way to reach that layer, but hypervisor compromise can also begin through other routes, such as privileged access to the host.

Not every virtualization vulnerability amounts to hyperjacking, and not every hypervisor compromise is a stealth rootkit. The label describes the compromised layer, not one universal entry method or a single attack sequence.

What can a hypervisor compromise do?

Because the hypervisor mediates access and enforces separation, control at that layer can undermine the isolation on which hosted workloads depend. An attacker with sufficient hypervisor-level control may have opportunities to observe or alter VM activity, reach data or resources that should be isolated, install rootkits, or attack other VMs on the same host. NIST discusses these possible consequences in SP 800-125A Rev. 1.

The exact impact depends on the hypervisor, its configuration, the attacker’s access, and which workloads share the host. These risks do not mean that every hypervisor vulnerability enables control of every guest. Nor do the cited sources establish one standard chain of events that defines every hyperjacking incident.

Can a hypervisor rootkit hide from the operating system?

It can potentially place malicious code outside the normal view of a running guest operating system. Microsoft’s Fileless threats explainer describes malware that takes over a machine and implements a small hypervisor to hide beyond the operating system’s realm. That is a stealth possibility, not proof that every hypervisor compromise is invisible to all monitoring or that every compromise uses this technique.

Microsoft says hypervisor rootkits have been observed, but that few are known. This is a qualitative statement, not a current global incidence rate. The cited official sources do not establish how often hyperjacking occurs today, so it is not justified to call it either widespread or impossible.

What historical vulnerability figures can—and cannot—tell you

Draft NISTIR 8221 (2018) analyzed NIST National Vulnerability Database reports for Xen and KVM during 2016 and 2017. It listed 83 Xen hypervisor vulnerabilities and 20 KVM hypervisor vulnerabilities in that historical sample. These are not current totals, an estimate of present-day risk, or figures representative of all hypervisors.

Within that sample, the draft found soft memory management and I/O or networking to be the most represented functional areas, and denial of service and privilege escalation to be the most common attack impacts. Those results describe the draft’s selected reports, not a current ranking of risks across vendors. The paper also examined two sample attacks for forensic evidence and reported finding more evidence about execution paths in runtime memory. That methodological observation is not a universal detection rule.

How to reduce hyperjacking risk

For organizations running virtualized systems, protection should cover more than guest antivirus. Prioritize the physical host and management plane, then secure the guests, VM material, and virtual networks. The specific controls below include Microsoft guidance for Hyper-V on Windows Server; they should not be assumed to apply identically to every hypervisor.

Harden and maintain the host

  • Install only the minimum Windows Server components needed for the Hyper-V management operating system. Do not use the Hyper-V host as a workstation or install unnecessary software.
  • Keep the host operating system, firmware, and drivers current. Microsoft’s Hyper-V security planning guidance, last updated November 1, 2024, recommends these measures.
  • Use code-integrity policies and virtualization-based security-protected Code Integrity services for Hyper-V hosts where supported and appropriate; apply Windows Server security baselines.

Restrict and isolate management access

  • Manage the Hyper-V host remotely rather than using it as a general-purpose workstation.
  • Separate management networking; Microsoft recommends a dedicated adapter for the physical Hyper-V computer. Keep VM configuration files and virtual hard disk access on private or secure networks.
  • Limit host permissions to people who need to administer the host. Do not grant VM administrators host operating-system permissions by default.

Protect guests and virtual machine data

  • Patch and harden each guest operating system. Configure antivirus, firewalls, and intrusion detection to suit the workload.
  • Protect VM configuration files, virtual disks, and snapshots from unauthorized access or modification.
  • For supported Generation 2 Hyper-V VMs, enable Secure Boot.

Secure the virtual network and plan for recovery

Virtual switches and network segmentation have their own security requirements. NIST’s SP 800-125A Rev. 1 focuses on server hypervisor baseline functions and points to SP 800-125B for secure virtual-network configuration.

Include hypervisors and associated infrastructure in update and hardening plans. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide notes that ransomware strategies have targeted hypervisors and other centralized tools to encrypt infrastructure at scale. This supports treating virtualization as part of organizational resilience; it does not, by itself, establish a specific hyperjacking incident.

What should administrators consider if compromise is suspected?

A guest-only antivirus scan cannot conclusively rule out compromise below the guest operating system. Investigations need to account for the hypervisor and host, the management path, and the platform’s available evidence sources. NISTIR 8221’s runtime-memory finding comes from historical draft research focused on Xen and KVM, so it should inform—not dictate—an organization’s forensic plan.

  • Use incident-response procedures suited to the specific hypervisor and host platform; preserve relevant host and management-plane evidence as well as guest evidence.
  • Review privileged access and configuration changes, and assess whether other VMs or shared resources could have been affected.
  • Consult the platform vendor’s current security and recovery guidance before deciding whether a host can be trusted again.
