A camper at Adams Lake in British Columbia thought a dark object on the shore was a discarded flip-flop. According to CRBC News, it was a mastodon molar, identified by Royal BC Museum paleontology researcher Derek Larson.
What did the camper find?
Kamloops camper Ron Storie found the object at Adams Lake on September 14, 2026, CRBC News reported. The outlet says he initially mistook it for a flip-flop; when he examined it, he saw a dense block of teeth. Larson identified it as a mastodon molar, a large grinding tooth.
CRBC News reported the tooth weighed about 2.2 pounds. That figure comes from the news account; a separate museum confirmation was not located. The outlet also called it the third mastodon specimen documented in British Columbia, a count that likewise has not been independently confirmed in a museum record.
How old is the tooth?
CRBC News attributed an approximate age of 75,000 to 125,000 years to Larson. This is a preliminary estimate reported by the outlet, not a confirmed specimen-specific date from a published dating result.

The available account does not establish that the specimen has been donated, formally dated, or placed on display. CRBC News said Storie planned to donate it, but the final disposition was not independently confirmed. The identification and other discovery details currently come from that news report; no Royal BC Museum announcement or specimen record for this tooth was located.
How should you report a fossil found in British Columbia?
The Province of British Columbia asks people to report fossil discoveries to the BC Fossil Management Office, the Royal BC Museum, or a local museum. The province says vertebrate fossil sites and unusual or rare specimens must be reported. Its guidance also says recreationally collected common fossils are for personal use and cannot be sold or removed from British Columbia. Rules may differ on protected land, so check the site’s jurisdiction before collecting or moving anything. See the province’s collection and use guidance, updated May 1, 2026.
