A study of the Moon’s far-side Dewar swirl links its magnetic anomaly to a shallow, dense body that researchers interpret as buried mare basalt. The team estimates that the magnetization records a field stronger than 11 microtesla and argues that it supports a lunar dynamo active about 4.2 billion years ago. The body is inferred from gravity and magnetic data—not a volcano directly seen or sampled—and the result adds evidence to a debate rather than settling it.
What did researchers find beneath the Dewar swirl?
The Dewar swirl is a bright, high-albedo feature on the Moon’s far side, associated with a magnetic anomaly. In a study published in Science Advances online on September 23, 2026, Xi Yang, Anna Mittelholz, Adrien Broquet, and Max Moorkamp jointly analyzed gravity and magnetic observations of the area. They inferred a shallow, high-density, magnetized body consistent with buried mare basalt. The study record describes a geophysical interpretation, not a directly observed or sampled volcano.
Mare basalt is volcanic rock; the finding therefore points to a possible buried volcanic structure beneath the swirl. It does not establish that researchers have located an exposed volcano or directly identified the body’s material.
What does the magnetic estimate say about the ancient Moon?
The authors estimate a paleointensity—the strength of the magnetic field recorded by the material—exceeding 11 microtesla (µT). They interpret this as evidence suggesting that a lunar dynamo was active about 4.2 billion years ago. The age is constrained by basin ejecta superposed on the feature, according to the study abstract.

The distinction is important: more than 11 µT is the study’s estimated paleointensity, not a direct measurement of the Moon’s global magnetic field at that time. The early dynamo is the authors’ interpretation of the evidence, not a direct observation of the Moon’s core in the past.
How does this fit the debate over lunar magnetism?
A dynamo is a process in which motion within a conducting interior generates a magnetic field. Whether, and for how long, the Moon operated such a process remains an open question. Returned lunar samples have produced complex and contradictory paleomagnetic records, while orbital magnetic anomalies have been attributed either to a core-generated dynamo or to transient fields produced by impacts.

The Dewar result offers another constraint: it connects an inferred buried volcanic body with strong ancient magnetization and supports an early-dynamo explanation. It does not resolve the conflicting evidence or establish the full duration and history of lunar magnetism.
Why a buried volcanic body is geologically plausible
NASA describes the Moon as volcanically inactive today but notes widespread evidence of past activity, including cooled-lava plains and domes. Its broader geology account also discusses gravity anomalies around the Procellarum region that are interpreted as ancient rift zones flooded by lava and later buried beneath volcanic plains. These examples show that volcanic structures can be concealed in lunar geology; they do not independently verify the particular body inferred below the Dewar swirl.

What the study says about the swirl
The abstract reports that swirl formation requires horizontal magnetization and iron oxide enrichment. Those are stated conditions in the study’s account; the abstract does not provide enough methodological detail to explain how they were derived or how much each contributes. They should not be treated as a complete explanation of how the Dewar swirl formed.
