For Arabic-and-English web pages, set the page’s base direction explicitly, declare language separately, and mark any text run that switches direction. Keep source text in logical reading order; let the browser’s bidirectional algorithm determine its display. Use dir="auto" when a field’s direction is not known in advance, and reserve invisible direction marks for specific punctuation problems.
Set the document’s language and direction independently
Language and direction describe different things. A lang declaration identifies a language; dir sets text direction. Neither substitutes for the other. As W3C Internationalization puts it, “Direction is a property of scripts, not language” (Authoring HTML: Handling Right-to-left Scripts).
- Declare the language of each page or content region as appropriate.
- For an RTL document, set
dir="rtl"on thehtmlelement, as recommended by the W3C RTL tutorial. - Use a local direction only for a section or component whose direction differs from the surrounding base direction.
Arabic text typically runs right to left, while embedded Latin-script text and many numerals run left to right. The browser’s Unicode bidirectional algorithm resolves their visual ordering, but it needs the correct base direction and structural cues for direction changes.
Keep mixed Arabic and English text in logical order
Write the source in the order a person reads it; do not reverse strings manually to make them appear RTL. When a known phrase runs opposite to its surrounding text, tightly wrap that phrase in an element with the appropriate dir value. For example, an English product name inside Arabic prose can be marked as an LTR run with dir="ltr". Likewise, an Arabic phrase inside English prose can be marked dir="rtl".

W3C’s Inline markup and bidirectional text in HTML advises: “If you know the direction of all the text involved, tightly wrap every opposite-direction phrase in markup, and use the dir attribute on that markup.” Keep the marked span as narrow as practical, and nest markup if a phrase itself contains another directional run.
Choose explicit direction, auto direction, or character marks

The W3C tutorial identifies dir="auto" for inputs, pre content, and inserted content. It also advises: “Avoid using CSS or Unicode control codes for managing direction where you can use markup.”

Check punctuation where direction changes
Parentheses, quotation marks, separators, punctuation, and nearby numbers can be difficult at the boundary between Arabic and Latin runs. These characters are often directionally neutral, so their displayed position can depend on the surrounding strong characters.
- Find a mixed-direction phrase with punctuation at the run boundary.
- Check whether the punctuation appears on the intended side in the rendered text.
- First ensure the base direction and inline
dirmarkup correctly describe the text. - If the punctuation still renders incorrectly, evaluate a narrowly placed left-to-right mark (LRM) or right-to-left mark (RLM). The WAI H34 technique describes these marks for controlling neutral-character placement.
Treat a direction mark as a targeted repair for a specific boundary case, not as a substitute for understandable source markup.

Review forms and dynamic text with focused test cases
For a field that may receive Arabic, English, or mixed input and has no predetermined direction, consider dir="auto". Where the server needs to know the direction in which a user entered a value, assess dirname. Check actual content cases rather than relying on a single sample:
- Empty fields
- Arabic-first input
- English-first input
- Mixed-script input
- Numerals and punctuation
These are useful QA cases derived from the documented directionality concerns; they are not reported test results for a particular product or browser.

Use this review checklist across page contexts
- Review both Arabic-primary and English-primary contexts. A component that looks correct in one base direction may fail when embedded in the other.
- Inspect the source markup as well as the rendered view. Confirm that direction is expressed structurally and that strings remain in logical reading order.
- For each defect, record the surrounding text, base direction, inline run boundaries, and punctuation that triggers it. WAI H34 directs reviewers to examine direction changes and adjacent neutral characters.
- Validate behavior against the browser and assistive-technology matrix your team supports. The cited guidance does not establish outcomes for any specific matrix, so check the combinations relevant to your product.
