Claude Design lets you create visual drafts by describing what you want in a chat and refining the result on a canvas. You can use it for prototypes, wireframes, presentations, one-pagers, and other visual work without beginning from a blank design file. Access is currently a beta feature on eligible Claude plans, with a separate enablement step for Enterprise accounts.

What Claude Design does

Claude Design is an Anthropic Labs feature for making visual work through a conversation-and-canvas workflow: describe a goal, inspect the generated draft, then ask for changes or edit parts of it directly. Anthropic announced it on April 17, 2026; its launch announcement described it as powered by Claude Opus 4.7, a launch-era statement rather than a guarantee of the model currently used. Anthropic’s announcement and the Claude Help Center guide describe examples such as interactive prototypes, product wireframes and mockups, design explorations, slide decks, and marketing collateral.

It is a way to develop and communicate a visual idea, not a promise that every output is production-ready. A useful approach is to treat the first canvas as a draft and refine it for the people who will review, use, or implement it.

Who can use it and where to start

The Help Center currently describes Claude Design as a beta feature for Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers. It is on by default for Pro, Max, and Team; an Enterprise owner must enable it. The standalone experience is at claude.ai/design, where a separate setting applies. Because this is a beta, availability and options may change.

Make a useful first draft

Before prompting, decide what the design needs to help someone do and what information that person needs to see. Anthropic’s Help Center recommends including the goal, layout, content, and audience. You can attach relevant references—such as screenshots, images, existing assets, a deck or document, or a code repository—if you have permission to share them.

  1. Choose the entry point. Open a Claude conversation, the Artifacts tab, or claude.ai/design and start a design.
  2. Provide context. Attach permitted references or explain the product, brand, constraints, and any required content in words.
  3. Describe the intended result. State what to make, who it is for, what it should communicate, and how the page or screen should be arranged.
  4. Ask for a simple first version. Request the core layout and content before adding complex interactions or visual polish.
  5. Review the canvas. Check whether the hierarchy, wording, and layout serve the audience. Then make focused changes.

A reusable starter prompt might look like this:

Create a [type of design] for [audience] to help them [goal]. Include [specific content]. Arrange it as [layout]. Use [attached references or design system] for the visual direction. Start with the simplest useful version; show me the draft so I can refine it.

This is a suggested template, not an Anthropic quote or a tested prompt. The Help Center’s own guidance is: “A good prompt includes the goal (what you’re building), the layout (how things should be arranged), the content (what information to display), and the audience (who will use it).”

Refine the design without losing control of the changes

Once a draft appears, choose the revision method to match the size and kind of change. Anthropic recommends establishing the core layout and content first, then adding interactions and polish.

  • Use chat for structural changes or requests that need explanation, such as reorganizing a page or changing its purpose.
  • Use comments to point to a specific component and request a targeted adjustment.
  • Edit on the canvas for quick visual changes when you already know what should move or change.

Make one or a few related requests at a time, then inspect the result. If the draft is not going in the right direction, restate the goal, audience, or layout rather than piling on polish requests.

Use a brand or design system when available

A design system captures reusable choices such as colors, typography, and component patterns. If your organization has already set one up, a new project can inherit it. You can also attach or import a system from a GitHub repository, design files, raw uploads, or a local codebase through the documented Claude Code /design-sync workflow. These options are useful when consistency with existing products matters; an individual beginner does not need to configure a system before trying a first design.

Understand usage limits before a large project

Claude Design uses the same usage limits as other Claude work, including Claude Code; the Help Center does not describe a separate allowance. Complex projects, large codebases, and many iterations can consume more of that shared capacity. If usage credits are enabled, the Help Center says they can allow continued work after included limits are reached. Plan details can change, so check the current Claude plan information for your account rather than relying on an old allowance or price.

What a beginner should expect

You do not need to begin with formal design terminology: a clear goal, audience, content, and layout give Claude a workable direction. But the tool does not remove the need to make decisions. You still need to judge whether the information is accurate, the visual hierarchy is understandable, and the result suits its intended use. Anthropic’s launch announcement includes customer testimonials, but they are company-published anecdotes rather than general evidence about beginner success, time saved, or design quality.
