A Google Cloud TPU is a Google-designed machine-learning accelerator that you rent as cloud compute to run workloads suited to its matrix-processing architecture. TPU stands for Tensor Processing Unit: a custom application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) built to accelerate machine-learning computations. You access it through Google Cloud rather than buying a TPU chip as ordinary retail hardware.
What does TPU mean in Google Cloud?
Google Cloud TPU refers to Google’s Tensor Processing Unit hardware made available as a cloud service. Google describes TPUs as custom-developed ASICs for accelerating machine-learning workloads. In practice, you select cloud TPU capacity and run software on a virtual machine or another supported Google Cloud service that can access the hardware.
A TPU is not a general-purpose replacement for a CPU. It is an accelerator designed around the matrix operations common in neural-network training and inference. That specialization can be useful when a model and its software map well to the device; it does not guarantee that every ML workload will run faster or cost less.
How does a Google TPU work?
TensorCores and matrix multiplication
A TPU chip contains one or more TensorCores. Each TensorCore has matrix-multiply units (MXUs), a vector unit, and a scalar unit. The MXUs do much of the matrix computation and use systolic arrays of multiply-accumulate units. Google documents 256 × 256 arrays for TPU v6e and TPU7x, and 128 × 128 arrays for earlier TPU versions; those are generation-specific specifications, not a description of every TPU.

The host supplies data to the TPU. Operands are loaded from high-bandwidth memory into an MXU, where values pass through the multiply-accumulate array and intermediate results move among its units. This arrangement reduces repeated fetching of intermediate values during matrix multiplication.
Scaling across chips
For larger jobs, TPU chips can be connected into slices and larger TPU Pods over specialized interconnects. A slice’s topology describes how its chips and links are physically arranged. The available sizes and topologies vary by generation. Code that works at one scale may need significant tuning when the configuration changes, even if the new configuration has a matching chip or TensorCore count.

What workloads are a good fit?
Cloud TPUs are most promising when the work is dominated by matrix computation and can keep the accelerator productively supplied with data. Google identifies large models with large effective batch sizes, long training runs, and some very large embedding workloads as potential fits. JAX and PyTorch can run TPU workloads, with compilation through XLA.
Fit depends on more than the model label. Tensor dimensions, model structure, compiler behavior, input pipeline, and TPU topology all affect performance. Benchmark the complete workload—including data preparation and execution—on the configuration you intend to use before committing to a large run.

When a TPU may be a poor fit
Google cautions that Cloud TPU is not suited to workloads requiring frequent branching, many element-wise algebra operations, high-precision arithmetic, or custom operations inside the main training loop. Such work may not map efficiently to the TPU architecture or supported software path. A CPU or GPU may be more practical, depending on the workload and available implementation.
How do you access a TPU in Google Cloud?
Google documents TPU access through Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), and Vertex AI. A TPU VM is a Linux virtual machine with access to the TPU device. A multi-host workload can coordinate multiple TPU VMs across a slice. Compute Engine supports individual TPU VMs or managed instance groups; independent hosts make sense for separate jobs, while a multi-host slice is for one distributed job.

The setup path depends on the TPU generation, location, and supported runtime. Choose a current, generation-specific setup guide rather than assuming that an older command or management interface applies to newer hardware. Google says the legacy Cloud TPU API is no longer under active development and recommends current Compute Engine or GKE approaches for relevant generations; older TPU v2/v3 documentation also has lifecycle cautions.
- Choose the TPU generation and size. Confirm that the generation supports your framework, runtime, workload scale, and intended management service.
- Check region, zone, and capacity. Verify the chosen accelerator is offered in a supported zone and that capacity is available for your deployment.
- Confirm quota and provisioning method. Ensure the project has the relevant TPU quota and decide whether the workload needs a single VM, independent hosts, or a multi-host slice.
- Use the matching setup guide and runtime. Follow Google’s instructions for that generation and service; do not transplant commands from an older TPU version without checking compatibility.
- Test the actual workload. Measure end-to-end training or inference behavior, including compilation and input processing, at the planned configuration size.
How do TPU capacity and pricing work?
Google Cloud offers on-demand, Spot, Flex-start, and reservation options, but supported TPU versions and availability differ across options. Spot capacity can be preempted, so it suits interruption-tolerant work. Flex-start is intended for capacity obtained as needed for a limited duration. Reservations are intended for planned capacity needs. Compare options by interruption tolerance, run duration, capacity certainty, reservation commitment, supported version, and project quota.

Pricing varies by TPU product, deployment model, and region. Google’s pricing page lists per-chip-hour rates, while console billing and usage may appear in VM-hours; one VM can contain multiple chips. Check the live Cloud TPU pricing page or Google Cloud pricing calculator for the region and configuration you plan to use rather than treating one rate as universal.
Zone availability is also location-specific. Check the supported zones for your selected accelerator type and verify live capacity before designing a deployment around it.
How should you compare a TPU with a GPU or CPU?
There is no universal TPU-versus-GPU-or-CPU winner. Compare the options using the workload you actually need to run, not just the accelerator name. Important factors include:
- Whether the model and its framework operations are supported efficiently, and how much compiler or code adaptation is required.
- Numeric precision requirements and the dimensions and batch sizes used by the model.
- Scale-out topology and interconnect needs for distributed training.
- Availability of the desired hardware in your region and through your preferred Google Cloud service.
- Capacity certainty, interruption risk, and quota.
- Measured end-to-end performance and total cost at the deployment size you will use.
Run a representative test on candidate configurations when the decision matters. A theoretical match between a model and an accelerator’s architecture is not a substitute for workload-specific performance and cost measurements.
