Use Path(path).is_dir() to check whether a path points to a directory. It returns False for a missing path or a path that points to a regular file, unlike Path.exists(), which checks for any existing file-system entry.
Check for a directory with pathlib
pathlib is a clear choice for new Python code and for projects that already work with Path objects:

if folder.is_dir():

Use os.path.isdir() in code that already uses os.path
If the surrounding code uses string paths or os.path helpers, use its directory-specific check:

Choose the check that fits your code

Both are standard-library options, and both follow symbolic links by default. A link to a directory passes the check; a broken link does not. Choose based on the path style and error-handling behavior your project needs rather than assuming one is universally faster or more correct.

Why Path.exists() is not enough
Path.exists() returns true when the path points to an existing file or directory. It does not establish that the entry is a directory. Use is_dir() when the distinction matters:
path = Path("/path/to/check")
if path.exists():
print("Something exists at this path")
if path.is_dir():
print("The path points to a directory")Account for Python version and errors
The result for inaccessible paths differs across documented Python versions. The Python 3.12 pathlib documentation says Path.is_dir() returns false for missing paths, broken symbolic links, and other non-directory file types, while other errors, such as permission errors, can propagate. The Python 3.15 pathlib documentation records that, since Python 3.14, status checks including is_dir() return false for invalid, inaccessible, or missing paths instead of raising OSError.

If your program needs to tell an inaccessible path apart from a missing one, use Path.stat() and handle its errors explicitly rather than relying on is_dir() alone. The follow_symlinks option for Path.is_dir() was added in Python 3.13; older supported interpreters do not accept it.
