If people can’t understand you when you call from a noisy place, first reseat your earbuds, clear their microphone openings, and check that the call is routed to them and not muted. The noise cancellation you hear in your ears is not necessarily the noise reduction applied to the voice sent to the other caller.
Why earbuds can sound quiet to you but noisy to the other caller
Active noise cancellation (ANC) mainly reduces ambient sound that reaches your ears. Call noise reduction processes sound picked up on your side so the person on the other end can hear your speech more clearly. Those are different functions: earbuds that make a train quieter for you may still transmit train noise to the caller. Huawei explains the distinction in its call-quality guidance.
Some models also have ambient or transparency settings that can affect calls. Samsung says Ambient sound may pass surrounding noise to the other party on some Galaxy Buds, while Sennheiser advises disabling Transparency during Calls in very noisy settings. The available controls vary by model, phone, firmware, and calling app.
Try these fixes in order
-
Reseat and orient the earbuds
Remove and reinsert both buds, then follow the wearing directions for your exact model. Samsung recommends fitting the correct left and right Galaxy Buds with their microphones facing the mouth and rotating them until they sit comfortably. Sennheiser similarly advises rotating its earbuds so the outer microphone openings align toward the mouth. These are model-specific instructions, not a universal orientation rule. See Samsung’s Galaxy Buds troubleshooting guide and Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 call guidance.

Check the fit and ear tips
For in-ear earbuds with removable tips, try a supplied size that holds securely without discomfort. A loose or unstable fit can affect pickup and noise control. Open-ear designs do not isolate outside noise in the same way: Huawei notes that FreeArc and FreeClip cannot match in-ear or open-fit earbuds for noise isolation in its support guidance. A fit adjustment may help, but it cannot make an open-ear design behave like a sealed in-ear model.
-
Inspect and clean microphone openings
Check the microphone meshes and openings for wax, dust, moisture, or damage. Debris can muffle calls, according to Samsung and Huawei. Clean only as the manufacturer directs; don’t push pins, toothpicks, or other sharp objects into the mesh. If an opening appears damaged or remains blocked after safe cleaning, consult the maker’s model-specific service guidance. See Samsung and Huawei.

Confirm the microphone is unmuted and the call uses the earbuds
Check the mute control in the calling app and any mute control on the earbuds. Then check the phone’s call audio route: the selected output should be your earbuds, not the handset or another Bluetooth device. Huawei identifies mistaken phone audio routing as a possible cause; Samsung notes that some older Galaxy Buds controls can mute the earbud microphone without an on-screen indication. The exact controls depend on your model and app.
-
Keep the phone nearby
Move the phone closer to the earbuds, especially if it is in a bag or pocket or you are in a crowded area. Samsung’s advice is direct: “Keep your phone close to your earbuds to maintain a stable Bluetooth connection.” If the audio cuts out or both sides of the call sound distorted, a connection or signal issue is plausible. If the other caller alone struggles to understand your voice, start with fit, microphone openings, mute, and routing.

-
Adjust call-specific sound settings
If your model offers Ambient sound, Transparency during Calls, voice isolation, or another call-sound setting, check its instructions and try the relevant call-specific option. Samsung recommends turning Ambient sound off temporarily or moving somewhere quieter when it passes noise to the other party; Sennheiser recommends disabling Transparency during Calls in very noisy settings. ANC may also make you speak more quietly because it blocks some of the sound around you, so speaking clearly and a little louder may help on affected models.
-
Move out of the wind
Wind hitting a microphone directly can overwhelm call processing or change how noise controls behave. Move indoors or behind a barrier if possible; avoid exposed, high-wind calls when being understood matters. Sennheiser warns that “wind may impact the quality of the phone call,” and Bose and Huawei also identify wind as a call-quality challenge. The effectiveness and availability of wind handling varies by model.

Isolate the source of the problem
Try another call or number, and if convenient, make a test call using the phone itself rather than the earbuds. If the problem persists after cleaning, reseating, checking settings, and installing any supported firmware update, follow the manufacturer’s service guidance for your exact model. Samsung and Bose provide model-specific troubleshooting in their Galaxy Buds guide and Bose support article.
How to choose earbuds for clearer calls
If your current earbuds remain difficult to use for calls, compare their outgoing voice performance rather than relying on ANC labels. Whenever possible, listen to call samples recorded in environments like yours; the cited manufacturer materials do not establish an independent head-to-head ranking or a measured improvement for any particular fix.
- Outgoing voice pickup: Look for call-focused microphone processing, voice isolation, or beamforming, and evaluate samples of what the recipient hears in traffic, crowds, or other settings you use.
- Fit and microphone placement: Consider whether the earbuds stay secure, whether tip sizes are available for your ears, and whether microphone openings remain clear when worn as directed.
- Wind handling and call controls: Check how the model handles wind and whether it has call-specific ambient or transparency settings.
- Phone and app compatibility: Verify that the earbuds work with your phone and calling app. Sennheiser says super-wideband call quality depends on the earbuds, phone or device, and app all supporting a compatible Bluetooth call mode; a narrower mode limits the result. Details are in its MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 phone-call guidance.
- Connection stability: Consider whether the Bluetooth connection is reliable in the places where you plan to call.
Manufacturer feature descriptions are not proof of superior performance across all environments. For example, Jabra says of the Elite 7 Pro: “Other products may offer higher levels of noise reduction on the receiving end of a call because the microphones are placed closer to the mouth, for example in a boom arm or on a cord.” That manufacturer note is a useful reminder that earbud design involves trade-offs, not a universal ranking.
