Ecommerce can help a business reach customers beyond its local area, sell through marketplaces or its own store, and connect online marketing with sales. But an online channel does not guarantee demand or profit: sellers still need to attract customers, deliver what they promise, protect data, and meet requirements in the markets they serve. Whether it is worthwhile depends on those capabilities and on how customers prefer to buy.

What counts as ecommerce?

In U.S. Census Bureau retail statistics, an ecommerce sale is counted when a buyer places an order or negotiates price and terms through an internet, mobile, EDI, email, or comparable online system. Payment does not have to happen online. The Census measure covers specified retail businesses, not every kind of online service. The Census Bureau’s ecommerce FAQs explain the definition and reporting scope.

For a business, ecommerce can also include activity that supports a sale, such as online advertising and brand building. The U.S. International Trade Administration uses this broader framing in its ecommerce guidance.

What are the advantages of ecommerce?

Reach customers beyond a local storefront

An online channel can put a business in front of domestic customers outside its immediate area and, with additional planning, overseas buyers. The U.S. Commercial Service offers guidance to businesses exploring cross-border markets. That reach is an opportunity, not automatic access to every market: sellers must consider how to reach customers, fulfill orders, and comply with destination-market requirements.

Offer another way to discover and compare products

Marketplaces let third-party sellers offer goods or services through an existing platform. Online listings can make it easier for shoppers to compare offers, while giving sellers another route to reach potential buyers. The benefit depends on the product and channel; being listed online does not ensure visibility or a sale.

Connect marketing with sales

A website or marketplace listing can work alongside online advertising and brand building. That gives a business more ways to present an offer to an intended audience and direct interested shoppers toward a purchase. These efforts still require time and resources, and the existence of an online storefront does not create demand by itself.

Sell directly to customers

An online store can give a manufacturer or other business a direct-to-consumer route in addition to, or instead of, relying solely on intermediaries. In its 2017 inquiry into European ecommerce, the European Commission documented manufacturers selling directly to consumers through online shops. That is historical EU market evidence, not a guarantee that direct sales suit every business or product.

What are the disadvantages and risks of selling online?

Online sales still require operational spending

A digital channel may reduce some barriers to presenting an offer, but fulfilling it is not costless. Businesses still need resources for the goods or service, order handling, delivery, customer service, marketing, and ongoing operations. In a 2000 speech, former FTC Commissioner Thomas B. Leary noted that online communication can have zero marginal cost while sellers may still spend substantially to provide goods and services. His observation is historical commentary, not a current cost survey; it does not establish a universal startup budget or prove that online selling costs less than operating a physical store.

Customers need reasons to trust the seller

Shoppers may have limited ability to inspect a product or assess a seller before ordering. Clear seller identity, accurate product details, responsive service, and dependable delivery help address that gap. Leary described the internet’s potential anonymity and the difficulty consumers could face in knowing who they were dealing with and whether goods would arrive as promised; that 2000 observation is not current data on how often those problems occur.

Customer data creates both value and responsibility

Online activity can give businesses information that helps them understand demand, but collecting and using information also raises privacy concerns. Leary discussed that tension in 2000. His speech is not an up-to-date account of privacy law, so sellers should check the rules that apply to their business and the markets they serve rather than treating that historical commentary as legal guidance.

Cybersecurity is an ongoing responsibility

Cybercriminals target companies of all sizes, according to the Federal Trade Commission’s small-business cybersecurity guidance. Security is an ongoing risk-management task, not a one-time purchase or a promise that one tool will eliminate risk. The FTC points businesses to the voluntary, flexible NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0, organized around six functions:

  • Govern: establish how the business manages cybersecurity risk.
  • Identify: understand the systems, data, and risks that need attention.
  • Protect: put safeguards in place to reduce risk.
  • Detect: look for cybersecurity events.
  • Respond: take action when an incident occurs.
  • Recover: restore operations and improve resilience after an incident.

For a small seller, practical planning includes protecting business and customer data, maintaining backups, making staff aware of security risks, and deciding how to respond to an incident.

Marketplaces can bring product-safety concerns and limited control

A marketplace may offer access to shoppers, but the platform does not remove the need to pay attention to product safety and seller obligations. A UK government report published on 24 March 2025 identifies concerns about unsafe products sold through online marketplaces; it does not establish that all marketplace goods are unsafe. The report also cites the Office for National Statistics’ figure that online sales accounted for nearly 30% of all UK retail sales in 2023, with the share having tripled over the preceding ten years. That figure describes UK retail in 2023, not global ecommerce or the current share in every market. See Online marketplaces consumer journeys.

Competition and platform rules can cut both ways

Online price transparency may make offers easier to compare and can intensify competition, but sellers do not always control where or how they may list products. The European Commission’s sector inquiry, whose findings were adopted on 10 May 2017, documented direct-to-consumer sales, selective distribution, and contractual restrictions that could include marketplace bans or limits on price-comparison tools. The Commission noted that some practices may improve distribution quality, while others may unduly restrict choice and lower prices. These are findings from a 2015–2017 EU inquiry, not a description of current rules in every country. The Commission’s ecommerce sector inquiry provides the EU context.

Cross-border sales add questions to resolve

Serving customers abroad can bring new opportunities, but it also raises questions about applicable rules and how disputes would be resolved. Former FTC Commissioner Thomas B. Leary wrote in his 28 April 2000 speech, “The e-commerce medium knows no national boundaries.” He immediately added: “This makes it possible for buyers and sellers to enjoy the benefits of a global marketplace but also raises difficult questions about where and by whose rules the inevitable disputes should be resolved.” The remarks are historical policy commentary, not current regulatory guidance. Before selling into a particular country, investigate its applicable requirements and how orders will be delivered and supported.

Environmental and compliance issues vary by market and product

The European Commission’s 5 February 2025 communication on safe and sustainable ecommerce highlights risks associated with goods imported directly to EU consumers, including non-compliant products, potential consumer health and safety harm, environmental damage, and effects on law-abiding businesses. These are concerns in an EU policy context, not proof that every online sale has the same environmental footprint or compliance profile. The communication is available as A comprehensive EU toolbox for safe and sustainable e-commerce.

Is ecommerce worth it for a small business?

There is no universal yes or no. Compare the online channel with your customers’ preferences and your ability to serve them reliably. The right decision may be to add online sales to an existing business, use a marketplace, build a standalone store, or rely more on in-person sales.

Decision factor Questions to ask
Reach and demand Can you identify customers the online channel can reach, and how will they discover your offer?
Product and buying experience Can customers make a confident decision from an online listing, or does the purchase depend heavily on in-person interaction or inspection?
Fulfillment and service Can you deliver what you promise and handle order questions, problems, and returns as applicable?
Security and data Can you protect customer and business information and respond to a security incident?
Channel control Would a marketplace’s access to shoppers help, or is control over your storefront and sales process more important?
Target markets Can you investigate the rules, logistics, and customer expectations in each market you intend to serve?
Investment and ongoing work Have you considered both one-time setup and recurring work to attract customers, operate the channel, and fulfill orders?

A marketplace and an owned storefront have different trade-offs, rather than one being the better choice for every seller:

  • Marketplace: may help with discoverability, but puts the seller within platform rules and alongside competing offers.
  • Standalone store: offers a direct storefront, but the business must still attract visitors and manage its sales experience.

Whichever channel you choose, account for operational capacity and market-specific obligations before treating online reach as a business advantage. General guidance cannot determine your exact legal requirements or operating costs; those depend on your business and where you sell.
