When an Azure Automation runbook fails, start with the specific job’s status, error details, and output—not with blind retries or broad configuration changes. Those clues help separate an unpublished runbook or expired webhook from identity, module, sandbox, network, and Hybrid Runbook Worker problems.
Start with the job’s evidence
- Open the specific job in the Azure portal’s Automation account, then note its status, start time, error details, and output.
- Find the last successful operation. If the job suspended unexpectedly, add focused output immediately before and after that operation, and handle exceptions explicitly. Microsoft recommends inspecting job status, adding output, and handling exceptions; a controlled retry may help with a transient issue such as a WebSocket exception, but repeated retries without diagnosis do not identify the cause. See Microsoft’s runbook troubleshooting guidance.
- Check whether the runbook is published if it cannot be started or scheduled. A runbook that has not been published is not ready to run.
Distinguish missing output from a portal display limit: Microsoft lists a 1 MiB maximum for a single job stream and a separate 200 KB limit for job logs displayed in the portal. The Azure Automation limits table describes these as separate constraints.
Match the error to the likely cause
400 error: webhook expired or disabled
Check whether the webhook is still valid and enabled. Renew or replace it through your organization’s approved process. Microsoft includes expired or disabled webhooks among documented runbook errors in its troubleshooting guide.
403 Forbidden: identity, permission, or network policy
Verify which identity the runbook uses and whether it has the required role or resource permissions. If those are correct, inspect the target service’s firewall and network rules. Azure Storage, Key Vault, or Azure SQL firewall settings can block a runbook even when the trusted Microsoft services exception is enabled. Microsoft documents a Hybrid Runbook Worker with a virtual network service endpoint as a route for this scenario; check the current service-specific networking guidance before changing access. See runbook execution options.

Subscription not found, missing credentials, or anonymous authentication
Check whether the runbook is configured to use managed identity and whether that identity has the access the target operation requires. A subscription or authentication error is not fixed simply by rerunning the job; confirm the identity and permissions first. Microsoft describes these errors and related checks in its runbook troubleshooting guidance.
“The term is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet”
This commonly indicates that a required module is absent, outdated, incompatible, or not loaded. Confirm the module and its dependencies are available in the Automation account, check version compatibility, and try an explicit Import-Module to diagnose loading. Follow Microsoft’s current module management procedure when updating modules. Microsoft says using Az and AzureRM modules together in the same runbook is unsupported.

“The job was tried three times but it failed”
Use the job’s error and output to check for module compatibility, authentication problems, or a service limit. Microsoft lists memory, network-socket, and module issues among possible causes; a Hybrid Runbook Worker may help when an Azure sandbox constraint is actually responsible, but it does not correct a faulty script or missing authorization. Compare the failure with the live quota table before changing the execution environment.
Job stuck or cannot be stopped in the portal
Check the job’s state and, if it uses a Hybrid Runbook Worker, inspect that worker’s health. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide suggests trying Stop-AzureRmAutomationJob or Stop-AzAutomationJob when the portal cannot stop a job. Verify which cmdlet is available for the account’s current module context before using it. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps.

Check whether the sandbox fits the workload
Microsoft’s Azure Automation limits table, consulted on October 5, 2026, lists the following sandbox and account limits. These are service quotas, not measurements of what a particular job will consume. Limits can depend on subscription type and scope, so check the live table for your account before diagnosing a failure against a number.
| Limit | Microsoft’s listed value | Scope or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Sandbox memory | 400 MB | Per Azure sandbox |
| Network sockets | 1,000 | Per Azure sandbox |
| Maximum runtime | Three hours | Per Azure sandbox runbook |
| Single job stream size | 1 MiB | Maximum for one stream |
| New job submissions | 100 per 30 seconds | Per Automation account; requests beyond the limit fail |
| Concurrent jobs | 50 | Enterprise/CSP subscriptions in public regions |
| Concurrent jobs | 10 | Pay-as-you-go and several listed sponsored or education subscription types |
| Concurrent jobs | 5 | Specified free, student, and open subscription types |
The concurrency figures are not universal: verify the subscription type and region. The limits page also covers module-import rates and job metadata. Consult Microsoft’s current limits and frequently asked questions for applicable details.

Choose between an Azure sandbox and a Hybrid Runbook Worker
Microsoft supports running runbooks in either an Azure sandbox or a Hybrid Runbook Worker. Its execution guidance recommends a sandbox for typical Azure-resource workloads and a worker where local access, elevation, third-party software, or other execution needs require it.
| Consideration | Azure sandbox | Hybrid Runbook Worker |
|---|---|---|
| Typical fit | Hosted execution for Azure resources, simpler authentication, and lower operational overhead | Execution on a worker VM or other supported host; requires host operations |
| Resources and runtime | Subject to Azure sandbox quotas, including the three-hour maximum runtime, 400 MB memory, 1 GB disk, and 1,000 network sockets listed in Microsoft’s limits table consulted October 5, 2026 | Not subject to several Azure sandbox resource and fair-share limits; constrained by the worker’s own capacity and health |
| Local services, private network, third-party executables, or elevation | May not provide the required access, software, or elevation | Microsoft recommends a worker for these kinds of requirements |
| Diagnostics | Inspect job status and streams in Automation | Also inspect extension status, local service, heartbeat, event or log files, connectivity, and worker metrics |
A worker changes where the runbook executes; it does not fix script errors, missing modules, or insufficient authorization. Verify current quotas and deployment requirements before making an architectural change.

Diagnose Hybrid Runbook Worker failures
Worker unavailable or jobs not being picked up
- Confirm the host still exists and the worker extension is installed.
- Check worker health and heartbeat, then inspect Microsoft-SMA operational logs for connectivity problems.
- For extension-based workers, review the extension’s Detailed Status and its recommendation. Check the Windows Hybrid Worker Service or Linux
hwdservice, and use the platform’s troubleshooting and log-collection tools. - Use the
HybridWorkerPingmetric when investigating ping-related behavior.
Microsoft’s extension-based worker troubleshooting guide details these health checks.
Jobs suspend when the worker cannot keep up
Microsoft says an active worker polls approximately every 30 seconds and one worker can generally pick up four jobs per ping. If jobs arrive faster than that and no other worker picks them up, jobs may suspend. Check that the worker is healthy and polling as expected; if the workload regularly exceeds pickup capacity, consider adding workers or spreading schedules. The four-jobs-per-ping figure is documented general behavior, not a guaranteed throughput benchmark. See the Hybrid Runbook Worker overview.
Linux worker job remains in Running
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide describes a possible worker CPU-quota issue and gives steps to inspect hwd.service. It documents removing CPUQuota=25% as a remedy for the matching condition. Treat that as a targeted change, not routine tuning: confirm the worker version and symptoms, and follow local operational policy before altering the service configuration. See the Linux worker troubleshooting guidance.
When the evidence points beyond the runbook
Do not attribute an individual failure to a regional incident based only on a general troubleshooting scenario. If the error remains unexplained, collect the region, job IDs, timestamps, and relevant service-health evidence before escalating. Module support, quotas, worker setup, and regional service conditions can change; verify them against the linked Microsoft Learn pages when diagnosing the current account.
