Microsoft’s February 2023 AI-powered Bing launch combined regular search results with conversational answers, linked sources and content-generation tools. The strategy was to make Bing and Edge more useful for questions that are awkward to answer with a list of links. Microsoft reported strong early engagement, but those figures do not show that Bing caught Google in search.
What Microsoft launched in February 2023
On February 7, 2023, Microsoft announced a limited desktop preview of a redesigned Bing and AI features for its Edge browser. The experience brought together conventional search, chat for follow-up questions and tools for generating content. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella described the aim as helping people “get more from search and the web.” Microsoft’s launch announcement framed the products as an AI copilot for web tasks.
Microsoft’s examples included asking whether an Ikea Klippan loveseat would fit in a 2019 Honda Odyssey. That was a company-provided illustration of a natural-language query, not evidence of a measured change in how people search. The broader idea was to let users describe a question in ordinary language and receive an answer synthesized from web information, with links intended to help them inspect sources.
Search, chat and creation in one experience
- Search: Microsoft said Bing would provide improved conventional results alongside more comprehensive answers.
- Chat: Users could ask follow-up questions and work through more complex research conversationally.
- Content generation: Bing could help draft material, while Image Creator offered image generation.
- Edge tools: Microsoft described browser features named Chat and Compose, including summarizing a lengthy report or comparing financial information.
These are descriptions of the launch-era product; they should not be taken as a guarantee that every feature remains available in the same form today.

Why Microsoft believed AI could challenge Google
Microsoft’s competitive case was that many queries call for more than a ranked list of pages. A conversational response can summarize information, explain a topic and respond to a follow-up without making the user restart the search. By putting chat inside both Bing and Edge, Microsoft sought to make that approach part of search and browsing rather than a separate destination.
At launch, Microsoft estimated that people made 10 billion search queries a day worldwide and said it believed half went unanswered. The company did not define the measurement behind that estimate in the cited passage, so it is best understood as Microsoft’s rationale for building a different search experience—not as an independently verified count. Microsoft’s announcement also said the system would provide links alongside generated answers so users could examine the referenced web material.

What Microsoft said powered Bing
Microsoft described four parts of the technology: a next-generation OpenAI language model customized for search; its Prometheus approach for combining that model with Bing; AI applied to Bing’s core ranking algorithm; and a unified search, browser and chat experience. These are Microsoft’s own technical descriptions and claims, not an independent evaluation of the system’s quality or performance.
What early usage figures do—and do not—show
On May 4, 2023, Microsoft said Bing had surpassed 100 million daily active users. It also reported more than 500 million chats and more than 200 million images created with Bing Image Creator during the first 90 days after launch. The company said daily installs of its Bing mobile app had risen fourfold since launch. These are Microsoft-reported figures from 2023; the fourfold figure is a relative increase, not an install count. Microsoft’s May update also described GPT-4 as among the models used with Bing’s search index.

The numbers indicate meaningful early activity according to Microsoft, but they do not establish how many users kept returning, whether people preferred Bing to Google, how the products performed side by side, or whether advertising economics improved. A user count or volume of chats is not the same thing as search-market share.
Early preview problems and the importance of checking answers
The launch was a preview, and reliability was a visible concern. The Associated Press reported that some early users received disturbing or bizarre replies, including emotionally charged responses, and that Microsoft imposed limits on conversation length and time. AP also characterized these systems as error-prone. Those reports concern the early preview period, not a current audit of Bing or Copilot. The Associated Press’s launch-era report documents the concerns.

Microsoft’s preview warning, quoted by AP, put the practical caution plainly: “Bing is powered by AI, so surprises and mistakes are possible” and “Make sure to check the facts.” Generated answers can be useful starting points, but a link does not by itself prove that an answer is accurate or that the linked source supports every detail. For consequential information, open the sources and verify the claims rather than relying on a fluent summary.

Microsoft’s naming changed after launch. On September 21, 2023, it announced Copilot as a unified AI assistant experience spanning Windows, Microsoft 365, Edge and Bing. Microsoft’s Copilot announcement marks that broader branding shift.

In November 2023, the Bing team described Copilot as the former Bing Chat and Bing Chat Enterprise, and said general availability for Copilot with commercial data protection would begin December 1, 2023. That is historical availability information, not current guidance about which accounts or features qualify. The Bing team’s November 2023 post explains the transition.
Did AI-powered Bing catch Google?
The available evidence here does not establish whether Bing materially narrowed Google’s search lead by October 2026. Microsoft’s 2023 launch and usage announcements explain its ambition and report initial engagement, but they are not comparable current market-share data. Nor do they provide an independent, contemporaneous comparison of answer quality, factuality, freshness, source transparency, follow-up handling, privacy controls or commercial models.
So the defensible conclusion is narrower: Microsoft made a serious product push to differentiate Bing and Edge through conversational search, and it reported substantial early use. Whether that translated into a lasting competitive shift against Google remains unresolved by these figures.
