Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) 2.0 is part of a retired product family, not a currently supported migration utility. Microsoft ended support for all MVMC versions, including 2.0, on June 3, 2017, and said it would remove the download without providing an archive. Microsoft’s notice does not establish when version 2.0 itself was released.
What happened to Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter 2.0?
Microsoft’s retirement notice, first published June 4, 2016, covered MVMC versions 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.1. It said support would continue for a full calendar year after the announcement and end on June 3, 2017. The notice also said Microsoft would remove the download from the Download Center and would not keep an archive. Read Microsoft’s MVMC retirement notice.
Microsoft Learn now labels the standalone converter as end of support. As a result, MVMC 2.0 should not be described as an officially downloadable, currently supported Microsoft tool. The cited lifecycle information establishes the retirement date, but not the original release date or version-specific changes for 2.0.
What can you use for VMware-to-Hyper-V migration?
Microsoft documents more than one migration route, but neither should be confused with MVMC 2.0. Check the current product documentation and availability before choosing a path.

System Center Virtual Machine Manager
System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM, also called SCVMM) has its own VMware-to-Hyper-V conversion guidance. It is a separate product, not a supported continuation of standalone MVMC. Microsoft documents several constraints that can rule out a conversion or affect the migration plan:
- VMware Workstation virtual machines cannot be converted.
- Virtual machines with virtual hard disks connected to an IDE bus cannot be converted.
- Online conversion is unsupported, so plan for downtime rather than assuming the source VM can remain live throughout conversion.
- VMware Tools must be uninstalled from the guest.
- VMware VMs on vSAN storage cannot be converted to Hyper-V with SCVMM.
Review Microsoft’s System Center VMM VMware-to-Hyper-V conversion guidance and check guest, disk, storage, and downtime requirements before treating VMM as an alternative.

Windows Admin Center VM Conversion extension
Microsoft separately documented a Windows Admin Center VM Conversion extension as a preview. Its workflow connected VMware vCenter to a Hyper-V destination, copied VM disks while the source continued running, and used changed-block tracking plus a final synchronization during cutover. This is not MVMC 2.0 functionality, and the preview’s availability has changed.
The preview overview listed vCenter versions 6.x, 7.x, and 8.x, batch migration of up to 10 VMs, and supported Windows and Linux guests; Linux VMs required Hyper-V drivers before migration. Its migration guide specified Windows Admin Center Gateway 2410 build 2.4.12.10 or later, PowerCLI, and VMware VDDK 8.0.3, with other VDDK versions unsupported in that guide. These are documented preview prerequisites, not requirements for MVMC.

Microsoft later said that a change in availability of Broadcom’s VMware VDDK affected the extension, and that Microsoft removed it from the extension feed. Its announcement points organizations considering Hyper-V migrations toward SCVMM, or toward Azure Migrate (agent-based) for Azure. Because extension availability can change, verify the current Windows Admin Center VM Conversion documentation and Microsoft’s Windows Admin Center announcements before planning around that preview.
