Microsoft announced Ask Copilot and taskbar agents as staged Windows Insider previews—not as features generally available to every Windows 11 user. Ask Copilot combines voice and text access to Copilot with a refreshed search surface; agents add a separate way to start and monitor tasks. The rollout Microsoft documented in December 2025 was a gradual U.S. commercial Insider test requiring a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
What Ask Copilot on the taskbar does
In its Oct. 16, 2025 announcement, Microsoft introduced Ask Copilot as an opt-in taskbar experience for Windows Insiders. It described one-click access to Copilot Vision and Voice, with interaction by voice or text, alongside a refreshed search interface that returns apps, files, and settings as the user types. Microsoft said the experience was intended to make Copilot easier to reach while working, rather than replace Windows Search entirely. Microsoft’s October announcement
Search results are not the same as Copilot reading your files
Microsoft said Ask Copilot search uses existing Windows APIs, like Windows Search, to find apps, files, and settings. It said this does not grant Copilot access to the content returned in those results. That statement applies to the taskbar search experience; it should not be read as a blanket privacy description for every Copilot feature or agent action.
Separately, Microsoft described the Copilot app’s recent-files experience as referencing Windows’ Recent folder rather than scanning the whole system or automatically uploading files. According to Microsoft, a file is processed when the user chooses to attach and send it to Copilot. Microsoft’s explanation of Copilot’s recent-files experience

What taskbar agents add
Taskbar agents are distinct from the refreshed search box. In the October announcement, Microsoft previewed experimental Copilot Actions through Copilot Labs for working with local files—for example, sorting vacation photos or extracting information from a PDF. Microsoft characterized the agent as general-purpose but said it would start with a narrow range of cases. It warned that agents could make mistakes or struggle with complex interfaces, and said users could take over or review work while it was running. Microsoft’s October announcement
At Ignite on Nov. 18, 2025, Microsoft described “Ask Copilot (preview) and Agents on the taskbar (preview)” as bringing Microsoft 365 Copilot, agents, and search into the work flow. In that preview description, users could start agents from Ask Copilot using a tools button or by typing “@,” then follow progress through a taskbar icon, status badge, and hover card. Microsoft labeled these interactions prerelease and subject to change. Microsoft’s Ignite 2025 Windows announcement

Agent workspace controls are broader Windows context
Microsoft Support describes an experimental agentic-features setting that is off by default, plus an agent workspace with a distinct account, isolated environment, and scoped authorization. Microsoft said the experience was in preview and that it intended to add more granular controls before general availability. This describes the broader Windows agent framework; it does not establish that every task launched from Ask Copilot uses that workspace. Microsoft Support: Experimental Agentic Features
Who could try it, and how to enable it
The October announcement framed Ask Copilot as an opt-in Windows Insider preview and did not state a blanket paid-license requirement for that announcement. A later, separate commercial rollout was documented in Microsoft’s Dec. 19, 2025 Windows Insider notes. That gradual test was for U.S. commercial Windows Insider customers with Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses. In the documented build, eligible users could enable Ask Copilot at Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Ask Copilot. Microsoft said Windows Search remained available through Start. The same December notes described a gradual commercial test of taskbar agent progress indicators and Agent Launchers, a framework for Windows apps to register agents for supported system experiences. The notes document a dated test, not enduring eligibility rules or broad release. The official sources cited here do not confirm that Ask Copilot or Agents on the taskbar had become generally available by Oct. 5, 2026; check current Windows release notes for status before relying on availability.

These are snapshots of different preview stages, not a guarantee of current availability or eligibility. The standalone Copilot app is another separate matter: Microsoft Learn documents how administrators can pin that app’s icon to managed Windows 11 taskbars. That policy is off by default, requires the Intune Administrator role, and applies only if the Copilot app is already installed. Administrators can target all devices or selected groups, and users can manually unpin an app previously pinned. Pinning the app does not establish access to the Ask Copilot taskbar surface or taskbar agents. Microsoft Learn: Pin Microsoft Copilot to the Windows taskbar

Do you need a Copilot+ PC?
The October and December announcements do not establish a Copilot+ PC as a prerequisite for the described Ask Copilot taskbar experience or commercial Insider test. Nor do they establish that every Windows 11 PC can use every Copilot feature: hardware requirements may vary by feature, and the preview descriptions do not settle requirements for every agent or later release. Do not buy a Copilot+ PC solely on the basis of these taskbar announcements.
