To enable or disable Microsoft Edge’s Process Isolation policy on Windows 11, configure Enable Process Isolation in Group Policy under Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge. Administrators configuring a device directly can instead set the corresponding registry policy at SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. Restart Edge after either change; the policy does not refresh dynamically.

Choose a configuration method

Use Group Policy when managing a device through Windows policy, especially where administrators need to enforce a setting consistently. Use the registry policy location when an administrator is configuring policy directly on an individual device. Neither method is a consumer-facing toggle in Edge’s ordinary settings.

Route Best suited to Consideration
Group Policy Managed Windows devices and administrators applying policy centrally or through local Group Policy Provides administrator control through the named Edge policy. The Microsoft Edge policy template is required for the setting to appear.
Registry policy Administrators configuring policy directly on a device Requires careful editing of the exact policy path and value; a mistake can misconfigure policy.

Enable or disable Process Isolation with Group Policy

Microsoft’s Windows policy template file is MSEdge.admx. Once the Microsoft Edge administrative templates are available in Group Policy, configure the policy as follows:

  1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor or the Group Policy Management Editor appropriate to the device.
  2. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.
  3. Open Enable Process Isolation.
  4. Select Enabled to turn Process Isolation on, or select Disabled to turn it off, then apply the policy.
  5. Restart Microsoft Edge if it was running when you changed the policy.

Microsoft’s policy documentation states: “Setting the policy to Enabled turns on process isolation in Microsoft Edge.” If the policy is not configured, Edge follows Microsoft’s gradual rollout process rather than being explicitly forced on or off.

Configure the registry policy directly

Registry editing is an administrative policy-configuration method, not a routine Edge preference. Back up relevant configuration and make changes only if you are authorized to administer the device. Microsoft documents the policy location and enabled example as follows:

  • Registry path: SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge
  • Value name: ProcessIsolationEnabled
  • Value type: REG_DWORD
  • Enabled example: 0x00000001

Microsoft’s cited example specifies the Enabled value; it does not establish a Disabled numeric value here. Do not guess a value from another Edge policy. To turn the feature off, use the documented Group Policy setting or consult the current Microsoft policy documentation for the registry representation. Restart Edge after changing policy so it reads the configuration at startup.

What Process Isolation protects—and what it may affect

Microsoft says Process Isolation helps prevent authorized applications on the device from reading or modifying Edge’s running processes and accessing encrypted data used by Edge. Microsoft also warns that the feature may conflict with third-party software that injects into or tampers with Edge processes. Examples include some antivirus, screen reader, and window manager applications. The warning does not mean every product in those categories will conflict; compatibility depends on the software and configuration.

The policy is Boolean, mandatory-capable, and non-per-profile, and Microsoft lists it as applicable to profiles signed in with a Microsoft account. Microsoft’s policy documentation, last updated July 16, 2026, gives browser support as Windows: ≥ 151; this is Edge browser-version notation, not a Windows 11 release number. The documentation does not quantify a security benefit or performance cost, so no specific speed impact can be inferred.

Do not confuse it with other Edge isolation features

Several Edge controls use the word “isolation,” but they address different things and are not substitutes for this policy.

Feature or policy What it controls How it differs
ProcessIsolationEnabled Protection of Edge processes against reading or modification by authorized applications on the device, and access to encrypted Edge data This is the policy covered in this guide.
OriginKeyedProcessesEnabled Separates most origins into distinct processes It is a separate policy that can increase the number of processes. Microsoft lists Windows support starting with Edge version 141 and an unset default of disabled in documentation last updated May 22, 2026.
SitePerProcess Prevents users from opting out of Edge’s default site-per-process behavior when enabled Disabling or leaving this policy unconfigured does not itself turn off Site Isolation.
Microsoft Defender Application Guard Hardware-isolated browsing for untrusted content It is a separate feature with separate deployment and enterprise configuration, not a way to toggle Process Isolation.

Microsoft says Application Guard is deprecated for Edge for Business and is no longer available starting with Windows 11, version 24H2. It is therefore not a current substitute for this policy on affected Windows 11 installations.
