Microsoft Foundry’s built-in Code Interpreter runs model-generated Python in a Microsoft-managed sandbox. Microsoft says the runtime uses dynamic sessions in Azure Container Apps, with each session isolated by a Hyper-V boundary. The public documentation explains the key operating behavior—region, networking, files, session lifetime, and billing—but does not disclose the runtime image, kernel, package versions, or detailed host configuration.
How does Microsoft Foundry Code Interpreter work?
An agent can use Code Interpreter to run Python for analysis, chart generation, and iterative problem-solving. Microsoft documents the execution environment as dynamic sessions in Azure Container Apps, with a Hyper-V boundary isolating each session. That is the published architecture; it is not a detailed description of how Microsoft builds or configures the underlying virtual machines. Microsoft Learn’s Code Interpreter guide describes the tool and its runtime.
Sessions run in the same Azure region as the Foundry project. If the tool is invoked in separate conversations at the same time, Microsoft says each conversation gets a separate session.
Is Foundry Code Interpreter sandboxed, and can it access the internet?
Yes. Microsoft describes the dynamic session as a sandbox and states that each session is isolated by a Hyper-V boundary. The Code Interpreter session does not inherit the agent’s subnet configuration, and Microsoft says dynamic sessions cannot make outbound network requests. This applies to the documented Code Interpreter session; it should not be read as a claim that every Foundry component has the same network restriction.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How does Code Interpreter handle files?
You can attach files for the agent to analyze, and the tool can generate outputs—such as charts—that can be downloaded. In Microsoft’s documented upload flow, an attached file is mounted at /mnt/data/{file-id}-{original-filename}. The guide’s supported-format list includes CSV, DOCX, PDF, PPTX, Python, TXT, XLSX, and ZIP, among other formats. The tool guide demonstrates uploading a CSV, asking for a chart, and downloading the result.
Attaching a file does not mean the interpreter can browse arbitrary storage, tenant data, or files on your computer. The documented workflow concerns files attached for analysis and outputs created by the tool.

How long does a Code Interpreter session last, and how is it billed?
Microsoft Learn’s guide, last updated August 5, 2026, documents a default session lifetime of up to one hour and a 30-minute idle timeout. These are operational settings, not a guarantee that a particular task will finish in that time.
Microsoft says Code Interpreter is billed per session. Its FAQ explains that continued instructions in the same thread during the one-hour active period incur the session charge once, while concurrent sessions are charged separately. The exact price is not specified here; check Microsoft’s live pricing information for the applicable service and region. Microsoft’s Foundry Agent Service FAQ describes the per-session billing model.

What does Microsoft not disclose about the built-in runtime?
The public pages cited here do not establish the exact base image or operating-system build, kernel version, complete installed-package inventory and versions, image-patching process, detailed host or Hyper-V configuration, CPU or memory allocation per session, or file deletion and retention behavior after session expiry. Those details should not be inferred from generic Azure Container Apps documentation or from other products’ Code Interpreter implementations.
When should you consider Custom Code Interpreter?
Microsoft’s Custom Code Interpreter is a separate preview option built around an MCP server and Azure Container Apps Dynamic Sessions. Microsoft describes it as offering control over Python packages, container images, compute resources, and environment settings. That makes it a possible fit when a workload needs custom dependencies or a configured runtime rather than the built-in managed environment.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the classic-agent retirement date apply to this tool?
No. Microsoft’s March 31, 2027 planned retirement date applies to classic agents described on its classic Code Interpreter page. It should not be treated as a retirement date for current Foundry agents or the current built-in Code Interpreter tool. The classic-agent documentation provides that legacy context.
