It combines very high CPU and GPU capability with unusually large unified-memory options, support for as many as eight external displays, and a broad port selection. That headroom can matter for demanding video, graphics, AI, or other professional work; the price is difficult to justify if your workloads do not use it. Apple announced a U.S. starting price of $5,499, while Tom’s Guide’s tested 256GB-memory, 4TB-storage configuration was valued at $12,299.
Who should buy the M5 Ultra Mac Studio?
Consider it if you can identify demanding tasks that benefit from its CPU, GPU, memory, or display capacity—and if faster completion or fewer workflow compromises are worth the cost to you. Examples include large video projects, graphics and 3D work, local AI workloads, and professional setups with several high-resolution displays. Those are use cases to assess, not a guarantee that every app will scale with the hardware.
For everyday browsing, video, and routine desktop work, this is likely excessive. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found the system far more powerful than needed for ordinary browser-and-video use and pointed to the less expensive M6 Mac mini as a more appropriate everyday desktop. That is the reviewer’s recommendation, not a rule for every buyer.
What does the M5 Ultra configuration include?
Apple’s 2026 Mac Studio specifications distinguish two M5 Ultra chip tiers. The listed base tier has a 30-core CPU and 64-core GPU; a 36-core CPU and 80-core GPU version is configurable. The chip also includes a 32-core Neural Engine, Apple Neural Accelerators, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and listed memory bandwidth of 1.2TB/s. These specifications describe the platform, not performance in every application.

Apple announced the M5 Ultra Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, with U.S. pricing starting at $5,499. Apple’s announcement-time education price was $5,099. Orders opened August 25 and customer availability was stated to begin September 22; Apple said the 512GB memory configuration was expected in late October. These are launch-time details, not a live price or delivery quote. Check Apple’s current listing for availability and configuration pricing. Apple’s launch announcement also made performance claims of up to 4.3x AI, 1.8x graphics, and 1.3x CPU performance versus its specified comparison. Those are Apple’s claims, not independent benchmark results.
How fast is it in independent testing?
Tom’s Guide published its review on September 21, 2026, after testing a Mac Studio it described as having a 30-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 256GB of memory, and 4TB of storage. The outlet valued that configuration at $12,299. Its results belong to that reviewed unit and test setup; they should not be read as scores for every M5 Ultra configuration.

The review also reports gaming results of 51 fps in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, 73 fps in Borderlands 3, and 77 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 at its stated settings. Its Alienware desktop comparison ran two of those games faster and one slower. Tom’s Guide noted that some comparisons with an M4 Max Mac Studio were not fully like-for-like, so use the figures as evidence of performance in that review, not as a universal ranking.
Tom’s Guide described the computer as cool and quiet during its demanding game and video-rendering tests. That is the reviewer’s experience rather than a controlled acoustic measurement or a guarantee for every room and workload. Read the Tom’s Guide review for its test context and comparisons.

Its specifications include up to eight displays at up to 6K/60Hz or 4K/165Hz, or up to four at up to 8K/60Hz, 5K/120Hz, or 4K/240Hz. Check Apple’s connection details against the exact displays and refresh rates you plan to use rather than treating the maximum display count as universal.
The port selection is suited to a desk with several peripherals: six Thunderbolt 5 ports (four rear and two front on M5 Ultra), HDMI 2.1, two rear USB-A ports, 10Gb Ethernet, a front UHS-II SDXC slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Map your existing devices, network, and card workflow to those connections before buying. Apple’s Mac Studio technical specifications provide the complete display and port details.

What should you compare before paying for it?
Workload and software
List the applications and tasks that currently constrain your work. Check whether the software can use the CPU, GPU, memory, or hardware acceleration that matters to your workflow. Apple’s performance claims and the review’s test results cannot establish how much faster your particular project will finish.
Memory and storage
Choose memory based on the size and number of workloads you actually keep active, and storage based on the media or project files you need on the internal drive. The reviewed 256GB/4TB machine cost substantially more than Apple’s announced starting price, and the available configurations include much larger memory and SSD options. Price the build you need rather than using the base price as a proxy for a heavily configured system.

Time saved versus total cost
Compare the final price of your chosen configuration with the time it could save on recurring work, the cost of waiting on current hardware, and any workflow limits it removes. If you cannot point to a meaningful bottleneck or a specific benefit from the extra capacity, a less expensive desktop may be the better fit. Current prices and delivery estimates can change; the launch figures above should not be treated as a current quote.
