Google says Preferred Sources is globally available for Top Stories wherever Google Search is available, which includes Canada. To use it, run a news-related search, find the source-selection control beside Top Stories, choose the publishers you want to see more often, then refresh the results.
What Google Preferred Sources does
Preferred Sources lets you choose publishers and websites you want to see more often. Selected sites may appear more prominently in Top Stories when they have fresh, relevant coverage. The feature does not remove other sources, and you can manage your selections.
Google launched the feature in 2025 and described its behavior this way: “When you select your sources, you’ll start to see more of their articles prominently displayed within Top Stories, when those sources have published fresh and relevant content for your search.” Google’s launch announcement
How to add a Preferred Source
- Search Google for a current news topic.
- Find the source-selection icon beside the Top Stories section.
- Choose the publications or websites you want to follow, then refresh the results.
Google’s Help Center instructions note that a source may not be available to select if it is not updated regularly. The control is for news-related searches, so you should not expect it on every Google search.

What availability in Canada means—and what it does not
Google’s Search Central documentation says Preferred Sources is available globally for Top Stories in all languages where Google Search is available. That is the basis for its availability in Canada; Google’s cited documentation does not provide a separate Canada-only rollout notice.
Top Stories availability is distinct from availability in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says Preferred Sources may appear in those AI features in languages and locales where the features themselves are available. Publishers also need to be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible for those AI surfaces. The global Top Stories statement is not a guarantee that every AI feature is available to every Canadian user. Google Search Central’s publisher guide

What Google has said about usage
In its April 30, 2026 global rollout announcement, Google said users were twice as likely to click through to a site after marking it as a Preferred Source. That is Google’s reported claim, not an independently verified causal estimate. The same announcement said users had selected over 200,000 unique sites; that figure is a dated snapshot, not a current total. Google’s global rollout announcement
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Guidance for publishers
Google’s publisher guide offers a localized, embeddable button, a deeplink to the source-preferences tool, and promotional assets. These can direct readers to the choice interface, but they do not guarantee that readers will select a site, that Google will rank it higher, or that it will receive a particular amount of traffic. Publishers should check whether their site appears in the preferences tool.
