ego-jev uses one bounded System One decision per browser step to choose an operation and a page element; ego-browser carries out the action, then the page is observed again. It is a skill for ego lite, not a standalone browser or a complete autonomous agent. The design is useful when the next move can be selected from a known set of actions. Text entry, login, payments, and other tasks outside that boundary are handed back to a planner.

What ego-jev does in the browser loop

The project describes a repeating cycle: capture the current page state, present a numbered list of interactive DOM elements, ask Jev to select an operation and its target in one typed request, execute that choice through ego-browser, and inspect the page again. The model makes a bounded choice; the browser runtime performs it.

The documented operations include click, fill, and select, as well as scroll, wait, done, escalate, and blocked outcomes. Operation-specific targets may be supplied together as candidates, but only the target associated with the chosen operation can be executed. This keeps the decision constrained to the available choices rather than treating the model’s response as arbitrary browser code.

The README says Jev does not write text and does not see a screenshot. It is therefore a decision layer inside ego lite’s browser workflow, not a replacement for the browser runtime, a general browser SDK, or the planner responsible for broader reasoning.

What a typed decision can—and cannot—choose

Good fit: choosing a bounded next action

The pattern fits steps where the page’s available elements and the intended operation are enough to determine what to do next—for example, choosing which listed control to click or select. Keeping operation and target in the same typed decision can avoid splitting those two choices across separate model calls.

Not a text-writing or screenshot-reading step

Jev does not generate the text to enter into a field, and it does not inspect a screenshot. The project says free-text work, canvas work, and content reading escalate to the planner. Tasks requiring those abilities need another part of the agent workflow.

Where the workflow hands control back

The README describes escalation for login, payment, free text, canvas work, and content reading. It also lists guarded actions such as pay, delete, upload, and confirm, along with low-confidence decisions and repeated actions, as cases for escalation. These are the project’s stated policy boundaries, not independent evidence that every risky action will always be caught.

A done decision is not proof that the task succeeded. The caller must provide a separate verify step to determine whether the intended result actually occurred. In practice, the model’s selection and the application’s success condition are distinct: the former chooses an outcome, while the latter must be checked against the page or task state.

Setup requirements and documented ways to install

The README lists ego lite installed and onboarded, the ego-browser agent skill, and a backend key as prerequisites for live use. For direct TypeSafe calls, it names TYPESAFE_API_KEY; for the Vercel AI Gateway route, it names AI_GATEWAY_API_KEY. Installation options in the README include:

  • npx skills add ZephyrDeng/ego-jev
  • Installing with GitHub CLI
  • Using a Claude Code plugin

The README also documents an offline mock-decider self-test that does not require a live model key. Implementation details are available in the project’s README, including skills/ego-jev/SKILL.md, the scripts/jev-loop.mjs loop, and a reference file covering options and thresholds. Check the current project documentation before setup because interfaces and requirements can change.

What the reported speed and cost figures mean

The ego-jev README reports approximately 300–550 ms for a direct TypeSafe decision with 20–120 elements, and approximately 20 ms for snapshot plus DOM traversal. It also reports about 11K input tokens and $0.0005 per decision, with output described as free. These are maintainer-reported figures, not independently measured results; the README’s figures do not establish performance across other backends, websites, network conditions, or tasks.

Those measurements also describe pieces of a loop, not an end-to-end task benchmark. They do not establish whether ego-jev is faster overall than a conventional browser agent, or whether it completes more tasks successfully. A fair comparison would need the same pages and conditions, equivalent workloads, and measurements of task success, latency, and cost—not just decision time.

How to judge the approach

The design is most relevant when a browser agent can make progress through repeated, constrained choices from the current DOM. To decide whether it suits a workflow, consider:

  • Decision shape: Are next steps bounded choices, or do they require free-form reasoning, generated text, or visual interpretation?
  • Division of work: Which component selects the target, supplies any text, executes the browser action, and verifies the result?
  • Escalation policy: What happens when an action is guarded, confidence is low, or the same action repeats?
  • Evidence: Has the complete workflow been tested on the pages and tasks that matter, with comparable success, latency, and cost measurements?

The README establishes the intended architecture and reports performance figures, but it does not provide a controlled comparison of ego-jev with a conventional per-step LLM browser loop. A separate ecosystem-directory entry describes a browser-use/jev-ultrafast example and an author-reported Google Flights result; that is a different example, not an ego-jev benchmark. The catalog says its inclusion is not a performance or safety endorsement.
