Microsoft is inviting Windows app developers to use a new Windows Update-stack orchestration platform to make app updates feel more integrated with Windows. Its May 2025 announcement describes a developer-facing API and features such as native Windows Update notifications; it does not say every app must switch, that Microsoft will host all app update files, or that the platform is generally available today.
What Microsoft announced for app updates
In a May 2025 Windows IT Pro Blog post, Microsoft introduced a planned update orchestration platform built on the Windows Update stack. The platform is intended to give developers and product teams building apps and management tools an API for a more unified update experience, including native Windows Update notifications. The goal is to reduce the need for each app to build its own update notifications. Microsoft’s announcement frames this as an option for developers, not a universal migration requirement.
Orchestration and file hosting are different things. The announcement describes how updates may be coordinated and surfaced to users, but it does not establish that Microsoft will host every app’s update payload or replace a developer’s existing hosting and download infrastructure.
Do all Windows apps have to migrate?
No mandate for all apps to adopt the platform appears in the announcement. Microsoft’s editor’s note, dated May 28, 2025, says apps already obtained through Microsoft Store—the company’s recommended approach—need no action to receive the described benefits if they continue using Store distribution. The post therefore presents the orchestration platform as a developer option, not a demand to abandon an existing updater.

What developers should verify before adopting it
The May 2025 announcement does not settle several implementation and availability questions. Before choosing a route, a developer should confirm the current technical documentation and assess:
- How much integration with Windows Settings and native notifications the route provides.
- How much control the developer retains over update timing and phased rollout.
- Whether the app’s installer and update architecture are compatible.
- Who hosts and serves the update payloads.
- Current enrollment, availability, and technical requirements.
- Whether the app already uses Microsoft Store, for which Microsoft says no action is needed to receive the described benefits.
The announcement alone is not enough to establish the platform’s availability or enrollment terms as of October 4, 2026. Check Microsoft’s current documentation before planning a migration.

Windows Update for drivers is a separate, established recommendation
Microsoft’s advice to distribute driver packages through Windows Update is distinct from the 2025 app-update orchestration proposal. Its driver-security checklist recommends submitting packages for certification before public release through the Windows partner portal, then using gradual rollout and defined Windows Insider rings to flight drivers. It also recommends monitoring rollout measures, including “Percent of Machines Without a Kernel Mode Crash,” and checking whether a kernel driver is necessary at all; a Windows service or app may present less risk.
Microsoft’s July 2024 Security Blog says WHQL-signed drivers undergo ingestion checks and malware scans, and that third-party drivers distributed through Windows Update go through Microsoft flighting and gradual rollout to observe quality before broad release. These are Microsoft-described safeguards, not a guarantee that driver problems cannot occur. Microsoft’s security post explains that process.

How the commercial driver deployment service differs
Microsoft also offers a Windows Update for Business deployment service for commercial management of driver and firmware updates. In a February 2023 announcement, Microsoft said eligible commercial subscribers and developers building solutions for them could use Microsoft Graph to review recommended drivers for enrolled devices, control which drivers are offered and when, pause individual drivers, and view deployment status through Windows Update for Business reports. This is a device-management service for eligible commercial customers—not the app-update orchestration platform announced in 2025.
