Google’s September 2026 Android Security Bulletin identifies a critical System vulnerability that could allow remote code execution without extra privileges or user interaction. A security patch level of 2026-09-05 or later addresses all issues listed in the bulletin. Check the patch level installed on your phone, then install any available system update from its manufacturer.
What Google’s September bulletin says
Google published the September 2026 Android Security Bulletin on September 8 and updated it on September 16. It organizes reported issues by component and lists CVE identifiers, vulnerability types, severity ratings and, where applicable, affected AOSP versions.
The bulletin’s most severe System issue is described as capable of remote code execution without additional privileges or user interaction. That describes potential impact under Google’s stated assumptions: platform and service mitigations are disabled for development or have been successfully bypassed. The severity description does not by itself establish that the issue is being exploited.
The title’s “over 50” figure is not independently confirmed by the bulletin excerpts available here; the official source should be counted across its full CVE tables, using a stated counting method, before that number is presented as verified.

What the 2026-09-05 patch level means
Google says Android security patch levels 2026-09-05 or later address all issues covered by this bulletin. This is a threshold for the listed September fixes, not a promise that every Android phone received an update on September 5. Rollout timing and included fixes depend on the device and its manufacturer.
Android platform bulletins are distinct from device-specific bulletins. Google maintains separate bulletin tracks for Pixel and other device categories, so the general Android bulletin alone cannot confirm the update status or coverage of a particular phone.

How to check and install your phone’s update
- Check the security patch level. Open your phone’s Settings and look under Security, Security & privacy or a similarly named section for Security update or Android security update. Labels vary by manufacturer. Compare the displayed date with 2026-09-05.
- Check for a system update. In Settings, open System or the manufacturer’s Software update section and choose the option to check for updates. Install an available update and follow the device’s prompts, including restarting if requested.
- Check again after installation. Return to the security update screen and confirm the installed patch level. If it is earlier than 2026-09-05 and no update is offered, check the phone maker’s support information for your exact model and region; the general bulletin does not establish that every device has received the update.
Google recommends updating to the latest Android version where possible. Its September bulletin points users to Android’s check-and-update guidance.
Why the rollout can differ between phones
Android security fixes can come from AOSP, the upstream Linux kernel or system-on-chip manufacturers. The Android Security Bulletins overview explains these sources and notes that device makers handle the updates for their products. A general bulletin therefore does not show when a specific model will receive a fix or precisely which device-specific updates it includes.

Google says Android security bulletins normally publish on the first Monday of each month. If that date is a holiday, publication moves to the next work day.

Google Play Protect is a separate layer of protection, not a replacement for installing system security updates. Google says it is enabled by default on devices with Google Mobile Services and is especially important for people who install apps from outside Google Play. Google’s recommendation is to keep the protection enabled while also installing the latest available Android updates.
