Apple’s published Mac operating-system list runs from Mac OS X Cheetah 10 through macOS 27 Golden Gate. In between, the branding changes from Mac OS X to OS X and then macOS. Apple’s current version reference lists Tahoe as macOS 26, so this chronology includes both Tahoe and the newer macOS 27 entry.

macOS versions in chronological order

The table reverses the newest-first order on Apple’s macOS version reference to show the releases from oldest to newest. The “latest point version” column reflects the versions Apple’s page displayed on October 4, 2026; point releases can change as Apple updates the page.

Why the names and numbers change

Apple’s naming shifts across three eras: the early releases are labeled Mac OS X, Lion through El Capitan are OS X, and Sierra onward use macOS. The numbers also change format: Apple’s list goes from 10.0 through 10.15, then 11 through 15, followed by Tahoe 26 and macOS 27 Golden Gate. The published sequence does not establish why the numbers move from 15 to 26, and it does not list public releases numbered 16 through 25.

What is the latest macOS version?

On October 4, 2026, Apple’s version reference showed macOS 27 Golden Gate 27.0.1 as the newest entry and macOS Tahoe 26 at 26.7.1. These are point-version snapshots, not permanent version numbers; check Apple’s live version page for the current values.

How to check which macOS version is installed

  1. Open the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen.
  2. Choose About This Mac.
  3. Read the macOS name and version in the window. Click the version number to reveal the build number.

Apple notes that the About This Mac window can look different depending on the system.

Can your Mac run macOS Tahoe?

Compatibility depends on the exact Mac model, not just a broad purchase year. Find your model in About This Mac, then compare it with the supported-model list on Apple’s Tahoe compatibility page. Apple’s list spans MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook Neo, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro; it includes some 2019 and 2020 models, but that does not make every Mac from those years eligible.

A Mac listed as compatible with Tahoe is not thereby confirmed for macOS 27 or later. Check the support list for the specific version you want to install.

Does the list give the original release dates?

No. Apple’s version reference establishes the official names, major numbers, and point versions shown above, but it is not a complete launch-date history for every release. For Tahoe specifically, Apple’s announcement is dated June 9, 2025, while its security-release history records September 15, 2025 as the public release date.
