Google uses “Hey Google” for the current voice-activation control; switching it off stops hands-free wake-phrase activation, but it does not necessarily disable the assistant or other ways of opening it.
Turn off “Hey Google” for Google Assistant
- Open Google Assistant settings on your phone. You can usually get there by opening Assistant and asking for its settings, or by finding Assistant settings in your device’s Google settings.
- Open Hey Google and Voice Match. On some phones, the menu is called Voice Match.
- Switch off Hey Google and follow any on-screen prompt.
Google’s Android instructions for accessing Assistant by voice describe this control. Menu names and locations can differ by phone and software version. If you cannot find the setting, search Android Settings for “Hey Google” or “Voice Match.”
What changes—and what does not
Turning off Hey Google disables the hands-free wake phrase; it is not the same as turning Google Assistant off entirely. Assistant may still open through touch—for example, Google says supported phones may open it when you touch and hold Home. If you want to stop those methods too, you will need to change their controls separately.
If Gemini responds to the wake phrase
Gemini has its own hands-free setting. In the Gemini app, use this route:

Turn Google Assistant off completely
If you do not want to use Google Assistant at all, use Assistant settings rather than only disabling its wake phrase. Open Assistant settings, find All settings, tap General (or view all settings if General is not shown), then turn off Google Assistant. This broader setting is distinct from turning off Hey Google, which only addresses voice activation.

What Google says about standby audio
Google says that while Assistant is in standby, the device processes short audio snippets to detect an activation phrase and does not send that standby audio to Google’s servers. According to Google, after the device detects activation, it leaves standby and sends the request. Google also says sounds that resemble the wake phrase, or an accidental manual activation, can sometimes trigger Assistant unintentionally. These are Google’s descriptions of how its systems work; see Google Assistant Help’s privacy explanation.
Google lists turning off Hey Google as an option if you do not want voice activation. Its separate suggestion to mute a microphone applies to speakers, smart displays, and smart clocks—not as a universal physical-mute setting for Android phones.
