The Surface Go 3 is most compelling as a small, portable Windows tablet—not as a low-cost laptop replacement. Its 10.5-inch touchscreen, built-in kickstand, and full Windows flexibility suit reading, notes, video calls, and light work. But modest configurations, middling battery results in independent testing, and the extra cost of a keyboard make it a cautious buy, especially if you expect demanding apps or sustained multitasking.
What the Surface Go 3 is—and who it suits
Microsoft’s Surface Go 3 combines a 10.5-inch touchscreen with an adjustable built-in kickstand in a device that starts at 1.2 pounds, according to the company. Its 3:2 screen and kickstand make it useful on a desk, tray table, or lap; touch input also works when carrying a separate mouse and keyboard is inconvenient. Microsoft lists 1080p cameras and optional LTE Advanced, though cellular availability depends on the model and market. Microsoft’s specifications describe the ports, display, and other features.
The trade-off is that the Go 3 is a small tablet first. A keyboard is an optional purchase, and the compact form is not a substitute for a larger laptop when you need a roomy display, sustained multitasking, or demanding creative software. It makes the most sense for light tasks where portability and Windows app compatibility matter more than speed.

Performance: choose the configuration carefully
The entry configuration pairs the Pentium Gold 6500Y with 4 GB of memory and 64 GB of storage. That combination leaves little room for multiple open apps or modern Windows storage demands, so it is best kept to light use—web browsing, documents, streaming, and similar tasks. Avoid treating it as a general-purpose laptop with ample multitasking headroom.
The Core i3-10100Y and 8 GB configuration offers more breathing room, but it remains an older, low-power dual-core system. In its October 2021 review, TechRadar’s Core i3, 8 GB, 128 GB SSD unit scored 2,596 in PCMark 10 and 907 single-core and 1,546 multi-core in GeekBench 5. TechRadar also found the unit struggled with multitasking and cautioned against heavy creative workloads. The Guardian similarly described performance as slow and inconsistent in its review. These are findings on 2021 review configurations, not fresh tests of every Go 3 SKU.

For email, documents, browser-based work, video calls, and media, the device’s compactness may matter more than its limits. For editing large media projects, running several demanding applications, or keeping many browser tabs and programs active, a more capable laptop is a safer choice.
Battery life: expect less than Microsoft’s headline maximum
Microsoft advertised up to 11 hours of battery life based on typical Surface usage and preproduction testing in 2021. The company notes that actual runtime varies with use, network and signal conditions, features, and settings. That manufacturer estimate is not directly comparable to independent lab tests.

TechRadar tested an 8 GB Core i3-10100Y, 128 GB SSD review unit in October 2021 and measured 6 hours 25 minutes in PCMark 10 battery testing and 4 hours 39 minutes in its movie test. Those results differ because the workloads differ, and they should not be read as a guarantee for every configuration or owner. The Guardian reported that switching from Chrome to Edge extended its own battery result by about an hour, while still finding runtime shorter than the predecessor. Its observation is specific to that publication’s test and browser use.
Keyboard, pen, and the real cost of a laptop-like setup
The keyboard is not built into the Go 3. Microsoft lists the Surface Go Type Cover and Surface Signature Type Cover as compatible optional accessories; the Signature version is the premium-style cover. Add the cost of the keyboard to any comparison with a laptop, and confirm the listing explicitly supports Surface Go 3 before ordering.

A Surface Pen is also optional, and Microsoft specifies Microsoft Pen Protocol. It is useful if handwriting, annotation, or sketching is central to your routine, but it is not required for ordinary tablet or laptop-style use. The Go 3 has one USB-C port, a Surface Connect port, a headset/microphone jack, and a microSDXC card reader. Charging works through USB-C or Surface Connect. That selection covers basic wired accessories and storage expansion, but users who regularly connect several peripherals may need a USB-C hub. Check whether the specific accessories you rely on need adapters before making it your primary computer.

Is the Surface Go 3 still worth buying?
It can be worthwhile if your priority is a genuinely compact Windows tablet with a kickstand and touch screen, and your work is light enough for its older processors. The 8 GB model is the more sensible target for keeping several ordinary apps in use; the 4 GB/64 GB model is a narrow-use option rather than a broadly capable laptop substitute.
Compare the total cost—including a compatible keyboard—with a Chromebook or mainstream laptop that has the performance, screen size, and battery life you need. There is no universal winner without matching current local prices and named configurations. Microsoft’s US launch price for the Wi-Fi model was $399.99 in September 2021; that is historical context, not a current price recommendation. Microsoft’s launch announcement also described optional LTE Advanced.
Availability deserves a local check. A June 2026 Windows Central report said the Go line may have stopped being manufactured, citing unnamed sources; Microsoft confirmation was not established. That report does not prove the product is discontinued globally. Check regional stock, warranty coverage, return terms, and whether a seller is offering new, refurbished, or used stock before committing.
