In February 2026, Microsoft acknowledged that Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat could summarize some confidential-labeled emails stored in users’ Outlook desktop Drafts and Sent Items—even when a sensitivity label and a data loss prevention (DLP) policy were configured. Microsoft attributed the behavior to a code issue and said it did not give anyone access to information they were not already authorized to see.
What happened in the Copilot email incident?
The issue affected the work-tab Chat in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat, according to Microsoft service-alert wording reproduced by BleepingComputer. It involved user-authored emails labeled confidential and stored in Outlook desktop Drafts and Sent Items. Copilot Chat could process and summarize those messages despite the sensitivity label and configured DLP policy.
Microsoft identified the incident as CW1226324. BleepingComputer reported that the issue was first detected on January 21, 2026. The available reporting does not establish that every confidential-labeled email was processed; the described scope is messages in those two Outlook folders.
Which Copilot feature and messages were involved?
The affected feature
The reports describe Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat’s work-tab Chat. They do not establish that every Copilot product, chat mode, or Microsoft 365 application was affected. It is therefore more accurate to describe this as a specific Copilot Chat behavior than as a general failure across all Microsoft AI products.

The affected messages
The messages described were authored by the user, labeled confidential, and held in Outlook desktop Drafts or Sent Items. Microsoft’s spokesperson described the issue as one where Copilot Chat could return content from such emails. The reports do not establish that messages in other folders or unlabeled emails were part of this incident.
Why were labels and DLP not enough?
A sensitivity label and a DLP policy were configured, but the service alert said the work-tab Chat was still summarizing the messages. Microsoft attributed the behavior to a code issue that allowed items in Drafts and Sent Items to be picked up by Copilot. In other words, the incident concerned a mismatch between the intended protection behavior and what this specific Copilot Chat feature did with those messages.

Microsoft said its access controls and data protection policies remained intact, while acknowledging that processing protected content did not meet Copilot’s intended experience. These statements describe different aspects of the incident: Microsoft characterized the issue as a failure to exclude protected content from Copilot processing, not as a grant of new access to unauthorized people.
Did Copilot expose the emails to other people?
Microsoft’s spokesperson said the issue “did not provide anyone access to information they weren’t already authorized to see,” as quoted by BleepingComputer. That is Microsoft’s characterization of the incident. The reporting does not describe unauthorized users receiving the emails, nor does it provide independent evidence of a broader disclosure.

What did Microsoft do to fix it?
Microsoft said it deployed a configuration update worldwide for enterprise customers. A later service-alert update, reported by ITPro, said a targeted code fix had reached most affected environments, while rollout continued in a small section of more complex service environments. Those reports describe the status at the time they were published on February 18–19, 2026; they do not establish the current state of every tenant.
How many users or organizations were affected?
Microsoft did not disclose a count of affected users or organizations in the reports reviewed by BleepingComputer and TechCrunch. The available information also does not establish how many messages were processed or how long the behavior persisted across all customer environments.

What should Microsoft 365 administrators take away?
The incident is a reminder that labels and DLP settings should be evaluated alongside the particular Copilot feature and content location they are meant to govern. The reports do not establish a separate workaround or a universal remediation step beyond Microsoft’s stated service updates.
