Microsoft announced its acquisition of Java specialist jClarity on August 19, 2019, with two linked aims: bring data-driven Java Virtual Machine (JVM) optimization expertise to work on Java performance in Azure, and support jClarity’s continuing open-source contributions. The announcement did not disclose financial terms.
Why did Microsoft acquire jClarity?
Microsoft framed the deal as both an Azure performance initiative and a commitment to open-source Java. In its August 19, 2019 announcement, John Montgomery, then Corporate Vice President, Azure AI, said the acquisition would support jClarity’s contributions to open source while helping drive better performance for Java workloads on Azure.
- Azure performance: Microsoft said jClarity’s expertise would help it optimize Java workloads and improve the experience for developers and end users.
- Open-source work: Microsoft said the team would continue collaborating with the OpenJDK community.
Those were the stated goals at announcement, not a quantified claim that the acquisition had already delivered particular performance gains. Microsoft’s 2019 blog described the intended collaboration this way: “Microsoft Azure and jClarity engineers will be working together to make Azure a better platform for our Java customers and internal teams, improving the experience and performance of the platform for Java developers and end-users.”
What did jClarity bring to Microsoft?
Microsoft described jClarity’s team as Java specialists with experience in data-driven JVM optimization, customer application optimization, and leadership in the Java open-source community. JVM optimization focuses on how Java applications run on the Java Virtual Machine, making that expertise relevant to Microsoft’s stated effort to improve the performance of Java workloads.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The acquisition also followed an existing relationship: Microsoft said it had sponsored AdoptOpenJDK since June 2018. That sponsorship began more than a year before the jClarity announcement; it was not a result of the acquisition.
How did the deal fit Microsoft’s Java and Azure work?
Microsoft presented the acquisition as an extension of Java work already underway. Its 2019 announcement cited Azure HDInsight and Minecraft as large-scale Java deployments, and named Adobe, Daimler, and Société Générale as customers running Java production workloads on Azure. These are examples Microsoft gave in 2019, not a current customer list.
Microsoft also said more than half of Azure compute workloads were running on Linux in 2019, using that figure to describe Azure’s role as a platform for open-source technologies, including Java. The figure is historical context from the acquisition announcement, not a current measurement.

What did Microsoft report after the acquisition?

It reports more than 2 million JVMs in production on Microsoft internal systems. The PDF does not state a publication date, and Microsoft does not attribute that scale or a specific performance result to jClarity alone.
When was jClarity acquired, and were the terms disclosed?
Microsoft announced the acquisition on August 19, 2019, and its investor acquisition history lists jClarity on that date.
